Thanks!

Although I'm not convinced that I will like "this sort of thing", I won't know unless I try it! Hopefully I'll be able to free up Friday evening and make it into town...

Well, I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow night and I'll also confirm the venue for Friday.
My piece is called 'Nocturne (Music for Bill: Part 1)' and lasts about 15 minutes and will be improvised live.

Hi

The concert is taking place at Newcastle University, in the 'Great Chambers' or something?
The start time is 7:30pm.
Last night's performance was quite stonking.
Vladimir Rannev's piece uses a projector, a pianist and a baritone (taking the part of Tchaikovsky) with some rather elaborate electronics (using a Max MSP patch that looks like a sketch for a Xenakis score...)
Mariam Rezai and DJ Sole 1's slots explored the turntable from improvisation to a studio-prepared track, to a full-blown competition style set.
Kelcey Swain's Interactive Noiseboard explored the fun that one man can have with an interactive whiteboard and wireless microphone.
Trevor Wishart's Imago was diffused live over 13 loudspeakers, and derived from a single chink of two glasses.

So there.

Harmony

Is it worth transferring this post to the new music board, or posting a note there alerting folks to this thread ?

Well I didn't want to plug my own concert on the NM board.
This seemed to be the best place to dump it.
It was (I think) rather a good concert.
I hope that IRF managed to get there and got something out of it.

I am too far from Durham, otherwise I would come to listen.
I am glad it went well.
They have a good music dept in Durham. I visited Durham last year. Nice small city and beautiful old cathedral.

HH, I did get there (mostly by trial-and-error, as your directions were a bit off  Wink ).

I'm glad I made the effort. It was interesting and more enjoyable than I had expected.

I'm trying to write something about it on my web site but struggling to describe it because it's so different to anything else I've been too. The furthest I've got is "It was kind of like Hawkwind having a psychotic episode" ... make of that what you will...  Shocked

Apologies for the directions.
I didn't know where it was until I turned up for the sound check at 4pm...
It was a bit of a mixture!
Not sure what to make of the Pinky and Perky item...

Ahh... the Pinky and Perky item... I'm afraid I found it totally meaningless Sad

I was surprised and impressed by the variety of styles and technology in use. Most of the evening held my interest and overall it was an enjoyable experience, though I'm not sure if it's one I would repeat often!

I don't know if you are interested in feedback, but I've put a review on my Web site. Perhaps naïve and uninformed, but honest opinions:

Thanks for posting this!
It's really interesting to read your feedback.
I'd say that I'd agree with just about all of your comments.
Re: what you had to say about Kelcey's piece - I think that he conceived of the work as almost a theatre piece. He's a bit of a techno-nerd and loves building gadgets to make noise, so this was a quintessentially representative work from him.
I'd suggest that the Wishart repays a second hearing. When I heard it on Wednesday I wasn't too fussed (that sort of British acousmatic music has always caused me problems - and the bells from the cathedral didn't help) but when I heard it on Friday, it just seemed to sit quite naturally and I wasn't worried about what it was doing (I'm not sure that's the idea of the piece but nevermind).
It might interest you to know that 'Beefevs' was accompanied by a pre-composed electroacoustic soundscape created by Mariam, Kelcey and another postgrad composer who didn't participate directly in the concert (Eric Egan), and that Mariam was improvising throughout. 'Routinedrum' began when the CD stopped (and was heralded by a more conventional form of discourse). Mariam didn't feel it went terribly well that night, but hopefully you'll have a chance to see her when she's feeling more on the ball.

btw, for those of you up towards Durham, Mieko Kanno is playing a piece of mine at Durham Univ. Music School on March 1.  I'm afraid I don't know further details about exact time and place, but I do know it's meant to also include "new or new-ish violin pieces by Christian Mason (UK), Juan Felipe Waller (Mexico), Sara Carvalho (Portugal) and Sam Hayden (UK)."

I can't be there, unfortunately.

The concert is at 1:10pm in the Music School next to the Cathedral in Durham City.
Admission is something like £3 (£2 concessions).
It should be really good and I'm looking forward to hearing one of Aaron's pieces!

I can say that Mieko more than does the piece justice.  Any shortcomings sit squarely on my shoulders.

Anyhow ... thanks, harmharm, for posting the details.  I hope there are a few who can attend a mid-week, mid-day concert!  You'll have to report back and let me know how it all went.  I'll be sound asleep here in Chicago as it's happening.

A really interesting and enjoyable concert!
Aaron's piece involves detuning the violin and it was amazing how much difference it made to the sound. I hadn't noticed the de-tune (Mieko did it surreptitiously)  and was wondering why the violin sounded so unresonant... It's the sort of programme that could have benefited from an interval, and it's the sort of programme I'd like to hear again so that it can sink in further.

The programme was:
Christian Mason, When joy became mixed with grief
Aaron Cassidy, The Crutch of Memory
Sara Carvalho, the moon lost her name
Juan Felipe Waller, De Jaque, Sal Gala y Luna
Sam Hayden, Picking up the pieces

I most enjoyed the first two pieces. The Hayden was also good (well they were all good, but some were gooder than others) but I think it suffered from its position in the programme. It takes a while to get going and I was disturbed by the change in pace.
If only we could have more concerts like this.
