West Forest Sinfonia 21st Anniversary Concert

22 June 2008

7.30pm at St Paul's Church, Wokingham (on the A329 near the station)

Philip Ellis - Conductor
Kevin Ransom - Trumpet
Ron Colyer - Violin
Juliet Colyer - Cello

Torbjorn Hultmark Alcantara
Roger May Flight to the Iolite
Brahms Double Concerto for Violin and Cello
Sibelius Symphony No.5

£12, £10 (concessions), £1 (under 18s, students)

The Hultmark work is a really well-written Spanish-influenced Trumpet Concerto.  It's had an extra section added at the start since the workshop on 18 May, which helps the thing hang together a lot more.

The Roger May work is a really well-written celebratory film-music type work.  Just tightened up a bit since May, and good fun.

Don't get put off by the fact we're in Wokingham and sound very provincial.  WFS can pull some real good gigs out of the bag, and I have a feeling from rehearsals this is going to be one of them.

Oops! And a slip of the Italics.  Roger May wrote 'Flight to the Iolite'.

Just returned from this concert. A fine performance of the Sibelius, really punchy brass and meticulous string playing. The new pieces were well received. Would need to hear the Roger May again, Tommo had maybe sown the seed that it was like film music and that's how I heard it. Torbjorn Hultmark's work avoided obvious Spanish cliches ( apart perhaps from a percussive interlude much enjoyed by the orchestra who could indulge in Simon Bolivaresque antics ) The jazzy section was more Guy Barker than Miles Davis perhaps but it worked well. Interestingly, it was a good lead in to the Sibelius and highlighted what to me sounded an oddly Spanish feel to some of the first movement of the 5th, a symphony that is certainly not all Nordic ice.

All in all a successful celebration of the anniversary ( it would be kinder not to mention the Brahms )

Bobby,

Thank you so much for coming along, and for your (what-seemed-to-be-accurate-from-where-I-was-sitting)  report.  Great to meet you at last.

A little tired now, as the Sibelius is a very muscular and physical work.  Just terrific though and I'm glad it came over well.  I'd love to play / hear the two new works again.
