Here's a rather unusual concert by the Ivory Duo - 2 pianists, one of whom is our member NatalieT.

It's at the Regent Hall on Oxford Street near Oxford Circus, London W1C 2DJ at 1.00 on Friday 15th August - and it's FREE!

The programme includes arrangements by Panayotis Archontides (the other half of the team) of

Yiannis Constantinidis - 8 dances from the Greek Isles

Alex North - excerpts from Spartacus and A streetcar named desire

Bernard Herrmann - excerpts from North by Northwest and Citizen Kane

and a couple of Greek Dances by Nikos Skalkottas (arranged by this very poster).

Alex North - excerpts from A streetcar named desire

Is this arrangement based on Alex North's own piano version or is it a totally new version?

Panayotis's arrangements all come from listening to the original soundtrack releases (yes, he has perfect pitch, apart from studies in higher theoretical studies and orchestration- apart from his piano studies at NSW/ Sydney University, Skalkottas Conservatory... ahem!, and Trinity College of Music) Cool
We hope to see some of r3ok members at the concert!

Interesting! Smiley

Alex North also made a ballet version of A Streetcar Named Desire. Very powerful orchestral music. A bit underrated, in my opinion.

That's an interesting thing we both didn't know- we should definitely look into it. Maybe you have a recording of the ballet to suggest?

I don't know how many recordings of this work there are. My disc is from Premiere Recordings (does this label still exist?) and it's a re-issue from a recording made in the 1980s by the International Record Institute. Milton Rosenstock conducts the New York Theatre Ensembe. Miltonstock's ballet The Legend of John Henry is also on this disc (featuring Leon Bibb).

Premiere Recordings also issued in 1991 a piano album by Alan Mandel. Alex North's Nine Piano Sequences from A Streetcar Named Desire are on this disc, together with works by Vernon Duke, Morton Gould and Elie Siegmeister.

Enjoyable concert in a slightly resonant acoustic. Debussy's Petite Suite enabled the duo to warm up nicely. The film music arrangements were worthwhile, North by Northwest being particularly effective, Spartacus preparing for battle bringing things to a suitable climax and nice jazzy touches to Blanche from "Streetcar". The Skalkottas arrangements were as expert as readers of the thread on this message board would expect !

For those in the audience in a position to see, the conducting of the Duo's young daughter added a fine visual accompaniment.
