Ah, my favourite Nielsen symphony. I'm beginning to get the impression that Nielsen is becoming more popular in this country. They used to dismiss him as "not original enough". Undecided

Well as you probably know Nielsen's 5 symphony was described by the British musicologist Deryck Cooke as:

"The greatest twentieth-century Symphony".

Well looking forward to my 1st time in dutchland  Cool

I didn't know that Cooke was a Nielsen admirer. I don't know many Wagnerians who also like Nielsen (I'm not a Wagnerian Wink ).

Robert Simpson was a great admirer of Carl Nielsen. He had a Dutch mother.

Yes dim_perks, you've probably seen RS's book on the composer:

It's pretty good although I read it years ago.

I remember reading somewhere that Simpson was puzzled by Nielsens's Sixth Symphony. I always found that one the most enigmatic of the cycle.

Don't worry, Rob:

The remark has become a sort of proverb in my social life. Wink

I was raising a gentle eyebrow at your grammatical ambiguity, Pim. Wink

I like Robert Simpson's music, although I only really know the symphonies - I've never quite got round to the string quartets and other chamber music/concertos.

I listened to the complete Simpson symphonic cycle on Radio 3 last year, t-i-n. Some thoughts:
