Here are two ways you can book tickets for a rock gig at the Grand Opera House in York:

1) Via the web, which uses Ticketmaster. £20 per ticket plus £3.25 per ticket [bad-]Service Charge plus £3.00 per order delivery charge. Then the computer will keep offering you seats where you know you will have a dodgy view of the stage. Total cost for four tickets: £96  Angry

2) Phone the Grand Opera House, where a nice lady will apologise for charging a £1.95 handling fee but will make helpful suggestions about where the best seats are. Total cost for four tickets: £81.95 Smiley

(No prizes for guessing which option I took.)

I don't know if Ticketmaster has got a foothold in the classical concert market yet but if it does, fight it every step of the way. It's one of the most evil things to happen to live music, and it's fast becoming a monopoly  Sad

Or you can book in person - you don't happen to know somebody who lives nearby and owes you a favour?  (Used to live there myself and never paid any booking fees to the Grand Opera House).

I try to go in person whenever possible -- I try to time things so that when I am going to York for one concert I can but for the next upcoming concert. Didn't quite work out this time, though.

I fall foul of them when I want to see WNO at the Liverpool Empire.

Fortunately I  live close enough to go to the theatre in person.
