I think Vengerov goes from emotions, I understand what he is trying to do. Also in another clip you can see how he changes bow position of the student without explaining how to hold a bow, but from colors and emotions he wants to achieve in the piece. It is close to me.
May be he makes to many faces for my liking, but he is good.

Oh, I  always believe you should go for emotions, but if you can, to achieve them within the bounds what the composer asks.  More on the 'How do you judge a perfromance / recording' thread.

For me music is vey much a heart and spiritual thing, but I must also try to remember the intellectual side and physical experience of music.  Amazing thing, that music can affect people in so many ways....
