David Takeno gave me a consultation lesson when I was 14 or 15 or so.  (I obviously wasn't a superstar violin prodigy or I would have become one of his pupils.....)  He was a tad scary - very demanding about memory and basic technique etc - but also had some good ideas for getting a teenage instrumentalist to explore the 'music'.  I remember him getting me to play the opening of the Grieg C minor Violin Sonata in many different ways - distant, right up close, angry, sweet, etc.  Rather than just ff.  Not quite how I choose how to interpret a piece nowadays Wink, but it opened my eyes then.

The thought of seeing people play the Bachs and the Ysayes is appealing.  Some fantastic works in there - Bach D Minor, Ysaye 3, and 6 (and 5.... and 4).  Unfortunately I was 'wounded' (traumatised) in learning the Ysaye 2 so have difficulty with this piece and the E Major Bach it quotes!  But I may still go along and see if I have grown up / overcome my phobia.

One other thought - do people find the sound of solo violin for a whole concert just a bit too much?  I have thought several times of doing an unaccompanied recital (it's easy for arranging rehearsals) but just didn't think many people would be interested.

Cheers

well milord there is the south bank, where all the "chamber music series" concerts can be got for £8, all the "international piano series" concerts can be got for £8 (and these are for normal people, not the concession malarkey in which i partake) -

there is also the barbican, where all the lso concerts that i've ever seen can be got for £6 (and it used to be £5)

it is a rare Wigmore concert indeed which is less than £10  Sad

Thanks for this t-p, I've seen it before but it's a god reminder.  I'm learning thsi piece (gradually, when I have nothing else to do between other gigs).  Not got very far yet.  Interestingly, Vengerov does quite a lot different from what Ysaye asks for, but I like what he does.  Perhaps I am changing my attitude to interpretation in my not-so-old age....
