(I have just realised that I have been writing 'Yevgeny' having heard it.) Yesterday evening he played a concert of Schubert Sonata in E flat.major; Beethoven 32 Variations in C minor; Brahms Six Pieces Op 118; Chopin Andante spianato and Grande Polonaise Brillante Op 22. Plus he played about six encores. It was a lovely concert - in the smaller hall of the Barbican and was very well received by a packed hall.

We picked up several leaflets and saw that Dmitri Hvorostovsky is giving a recital on 9th October, so we bought two tickets immediately. We shall stay the night at the Thistle Hotel as we did yesterday.

I can see this board is going to be much used.

This programme is very difficult. I am talking about Kissin programme. I wish I could be there. To play 32 variations and then Chopin Andante spinato plus all the rest of pieces. All pieces are Romantic repertoire which is his strong point.

Yesterday I went to HMV to collect a replacement boxed set of Poulenc piano music (the first box had a CD and a bit of the case missing) so bought a couple of Evgeny Kissin CDs too. One is Schubert piano music for four hands with James Levine, and the other is a set of four CDs with music from some of his older recordings.  Today I am listening to the Poulenc in between R3 and R4.

You can write "Yevgeny" or "Evgeny", there's no difference whatsoever - just different opinions about how to turn the same Russian letter into an English version.  If it makes you feel better, the same letter opens the surname of the previous Russian premiere, where it was almost always spelt "Yel'tsin" and not "El'tsin". Smiley   I think the "Evgeny" spelling is preferred only because it highlights the similarity to the equivalent name "Eugene".
