Hi everyone,

For those of you who follow the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, I wanted to alert you to a special recording at Symphony Hall tomorrow (Wednesday 14th). I'll be hosting a Q&A with CBSO Music Director Sakari Oramo and Chief Executive Stephen Maddock; a unique opportunity to put any burning questions to them direct about the future of the CBSO, it's concert programming, guest conductors, the new music director, anything at all. You are welcome to come to Symphony Hall in person; the recording starts at 6.15 in the main auditorium. But you can also post/email your questions and I'll put them to the guests on the day. We are recording the event which will then be available to download (along with my monthly magazine show) from the CBSO website a week later.

Any of you got any questions you'd like to ask Sakari or Stephen?
If you don't want to post here, send the questions by email to podcast@cbso.co.uk

One question I'll be asking is how do they feel about being seriously under-represented on Radio 3 (along with many other fine orchestras...).

Forgive the advert, but I'm really interested to hear any questions you might have.

Best wishes,
Tommy Pearson

Hi Tommy,

I think one of the questions many of us would like answered might go somewhere these lines:

If the BBC were to broadcast more of the CBSO's work, would the orchestra prefer to see it to go out live on the night as an event or filleted, frozen and served up pre-packaged out of context as just another music broadcast? Or are there no strong feelings either way?

Thanks,
Ron

I'll be happy to put that to them - certainly about whether the frisson of excitement generated by a live broadcast is now gone. As Roy Goodman said on Feedback, something has to be missing; it's simply not the same.

Really looking forward to the CBSO coming to the frozen North (ie the Gateshead Sage) on Sat 5 May, for Wagner's Tannhauser Overture, Elagar's Violin Concerto and Sibelius 5.

Ian,

The Elgar is brilliant and you don't hear it of it being programmed that often.  I haven't heard enough of Daniel Hope to know whether it will be worth looking forward to .  Have you?

Thanks Tommo.  No, I haven't.  If you can be patient till after 5 May, I'll try and remember to answer this!

I hope I'm not being a pain, but:

Has it been posted yet?  I can't find it.

I also can't find the full Joanna MacGregor interview.

(I'm enjoying the CBSO podcasts, by the way.)

Hi,
You're not being a pain 464 Metres!
Unfortunately I had a major computer problem last week and everything had to be delayed (all my fault, it was an accident etc). But I'm pleased to say that the Q&A Podcast will be available by the end of this week, as will the Jo MacGregor extra interview.

So sorry for the delay - it's been driving me crazy but thankfully the computer (my pride and joy) is now is good working order again. Phew! There should have been an apology on the site but clearly there isn't.

Glad you're enjoying the podcasts. So, apparently, is Mick Jagger! In a worldwide broadcast interview last week he mentioned that he downloads us - nice to have old rockers as subscribers!

Best wishes,
Tommy

Many thanks for the information.  Sorry to hear about the computer.  I was beginning to think that my internet navigation skills were letting me down!

Ah yes, you know it's not the same, we know it's not the same, but....

It may not be the same, but I don't agree that it's always worse. Indeed, sometimes I think it can be better. A true live performance, broadcast over the radio, can be really rather special, but if the performance is more mediocre a recording made in concert (which might have been patched with rehearsals, etc) can be superior - a fluff that doesn't matter in the concert hall, can be more irritating in the comfort of the home. A bit of flexibility is what's needed. Also worth noting that if something is sufficiently good if a taped delayed performance (broadcast in its entirety) really that different from a genuinely live one. However, I certainly would like to hear more of the CBSO on R3.

Ian - I envy you hearing the Sibelius, of whom I think Oramo is a fine interpreter (I heard him give a very good 7th with the CBSO a couple of years back).

The only thing I can think of by way of a question, is whether Oramo has any plans to record Kullervo to crown his rather fine (in my view) cycle of the symphonies.

The great day of 5 May has now been and gone and CBSO have been to the Gateshead Sage.  Being used to the chamber-sized Northern Sinfonia, I had forgotten the sheer volume of a full symphony orchestra.  CBSO brass seemed a bit below par early in Tannhauser but all was fine after that.  Oramo conducted Sibelius 5 without a score--very powerful.  Daniel Hope seemed relaxed and this carried over into his performance of the Elgar.  He played an unaccompanied encore by Ravel, too.

Sell-out, obvious not only in the Hall itself but in the crowded cafeteria too!
