Went to a concert given by the Dutch Ensemble MAE this evening. I believe that the concert was recorded by the BBC for Hear & Now.

Their line-up is: Double-Bass/Recorders/Alto/Electric Guitar/Piano/Trombone/Clarinet/Violin/Percussion

The programme consisted of:
Principia - Steve Martland
Slow Motion - Maarten Altena
Triple Concerto - Peter Adriaansz
Tapdancing in thé Sand - Robert Ashley
Tinkling (Killing time in an airport lounge and getting arrested) -  Yannis Kyriakides
Small Goodbye Song - Martijn Padding

A fairly Minimalist programme but what fascinated me was the recorder player - not something you see very often in contemporary ensembles! - who played a whole range of recorders including one of these, which I can't remember seeing before in a concert:

In case you don't know, they're contrabass recorders although I'm not sure whether it was the big one or the little one that she played.

Wow, I've never seen a contrabass recorder Shocked

But I do remember once, David Munrow playing something on recorder, I suppose minimalist because he didn't blow down the instrument and I remember thinking at the time I've done that!  You CAN get popping notes from recorders if you slap your fingers on the holes hard enough  Smiley

Incredible plumbing. I would hate to think what they must have cost though. For anybody who hasn't seen one of these extraordinary beasts before, perhaps an image with some reference for comparison will help to clarify the issue of scale:

I hope those instruments aren't typical of the species; they look like something my ex-father-in-law might have made in his "shed" (squeaking of which, and extraordinary plumbing), I still hope to have a go at making a rackett someday. You may snigger.

The recorder I heard was nowhere near as big as these  Shocked

It was taller than the performer when she was seated and the lower end was resting on the ground - 1.25m?

The recorders in 306. I have a (probably wrong) impression that the bigger those sort of instruments are, the less noise they make. Like ocarinas for example.

Having never heard any first-hand, I would think you are probably right - very quiet. Although I could be wrong. Recorders and organ pipes have much in common, and organs don't generally get accused of being too quiet, esp. in the longer pipes.

But in an organ, bigger pipes can be put on higher wind pressures, on the recorder you are limited to the pressure you can produce from your lungs...
