Now that BBC Radio Solent are on the air all through the night, playing pop music, Angry I can no longer press the button to switch to that frequency after 1:0 a.m. to hear bits of 'Up All Night'. The only solution is to change to a DAB radio. I always buy such things from the local shop and I saw a Roberts radio/clock/alarm one, nice and small and flattish. It will be £;70. Before deciding, I would be interested to know if anyone here has advice or opinions on this. Thank you.

Susan, if there is any chance you might want to record stuyff from DAB, do consider the strange looking, but very useful Pure Bug. It can be programmed to save DAB broadcasts to an SD card, and can take cards up to 2GB in capacity. It comes with a telescopic aerial, but if you unscrew thids, it reveals a standard 'F' type aerial socket, so an exterior aerial can be employed (that's what I do). I have mine set up to record Classical Collection, Afternoon on 3, Performance on 3, the evening repeat of CotW and Artist Focus each day they are boradcast, plus a few bits and pieces at weekends. A lot get wiped pretty quickly, but it's better than relying on the LA facility. I didn't bother with the "Bug Too", as a reconditioned original Bug costs a lot less and you can upgrade its firmware via the Internet in a few minutes and have essentially the same spec. and the "Bug Too", minus the separate stanby button.

Check them out here.

Bryn

Thank you for your post - but as it looks a teensy bit complicated, I'll have to read it several times to understand! I will copy it and tkake the info with me when I go in to the shop next week. The photos on the link will help to know what I'm looking for.

by the way, what is an SD card?

SD stands for "Secure Digital". They are small memory cards. See here.

The Elec shop  assistant is going to look through catalogues etc to see if he can find something that will suit me. They cannot carry a large stock there, and deal mainly with the older population in this area! The helpful, courteous service they provide is valuable.

The clock/radio I have at the moment also enables me to turn to AM and something else and at both points I have a French radio station tuned in which makes a nice change at times, and of course DAB radio will not provide this ...The only answer is to have both radios by the pillow I suppose!

Bryn, cheers for this too, I am having probs with  wmp 9 on me system, going to have to get dab, bug sounds like the solution.   Idon't see why so many broadcasters use wmp/real when there are better solutions-presumably theyre cheap to buy into.

marbleflugel, be sure not to pay more than about £70 for a Bug Too, or ten less for a reconditioned original bug. Don't worry about the "reconditioned" bit. I think there was an inherent problem with the original batch which was cured on the returns. I've certainly found mine very reliable so far (got it last Yuletide). By the way, you can turn off the Bug's internal speakers and feed the line out to your HiFi system if you want.
