I went to see the Rambert Dance Company on their Eternal Light tour last night.
They performed Eternal Light (choreography: Mark Baldwin; music: Howard Goodall), Carnival of the Animals (choreography: Siobhan Davies; Music: Charles Camille Saint-Saëns) and Anatomica #3 (choreography: André Gingras; music: Joseph Hyde)

Eternal Light was ok, but the dance was as sectional as the music (which I felt was a weakness) and I have to say that I didn't like the music.
There were a number of real clichés (the moment when the diamante crosses appeared really made me wince, and the bird that flew towards the moon at the end...) and I'm always going to be deeply uncomfortable when someone uses WW1 poetry to accompany the words of the Dies Irae.
Carnival of the Animals was just fun. Unfortunately there were one or two moments when the dancers went out of synch with the musicians (particularly noticeable during the 'pianists' movement - though I wondered if this was because they had rehearsed with a recording of a 'straight' rendition of the movement) but this didn't detract too much.
I loved Anatomica #3 and when it finished, I had a big grin on my face. I think that I've seen some of Gingras's choreography before and loved it then. Witty stuff, and exciting energy exploding everywhere. I think that I would define what it is that I like, by describing it as the composition of texture. I'm not really interested in narrative in dance. I like abstraction and texture, and fleeting symbols. The music was a lot of fun too. Different gamelan traditions coming in and out of focus, and a long silent passage that was just gorgeous.
