Yesterday I was singing Jakob Handl's 'Ecce quomodo moritur justus' and I suddenly noticed how much the setting of the last phrase ('Et erit in pace memoria eius') reminded me of something else.
Well honesty compels me to admit that someone else noticed it first, but it was I who realised that what it resembled was the chorus ending 'And their name liveth evermore' from (G. F.) Handel's 'Israel in Egypt'. Even the text is similar.
I know Handel borrowed lots, mostly from himself. But did he really borrow from his predecessor and near-namesake here? Did he even know of his existence?
Here's the Handl - I can't find the Handel anywhere.
