h-h

I have just acquired the Missa L'homme armé. Comparing it with the Machaut ditto - and I see there's an Ockeghem version too. I shall try to distinguish the different styles - which will be hopelessly beyond me. Any help from you or anyone will be greatly appreciated.
Wow. Well, really Baz is your man for this, but let's start a new thread in the Early Music Show tomorrow.
I'll see if I can grab some armed men from my library and we can see what we can see!

I'm a bit confused about the Machaut L'homme armé mass Chichi.
According to David Fallows, writing in Grove, the choice of the earliest mass on this song comes down to Busnoys (I've always spelled it Busnois), Dufay and Ockeghem... so Machaut's a bit out of the running.

Never mind.
I've found that we have Josquin, Busnoys, Ockeghem and Dufay in the library (along with a score for four anonymous masses which I may come back to later on - our Pierre de la Rue setting seems to have gone walkies). Will attempt to get hold of them tomorrow, otherwise it could well be after Easter before I get my thoughts together.

Don't forget there are two by Josquin, the later one of which has a rather strikingly static six-part canon as the last part of its Agnus Dei.

I remember from briefly studying in my student days that the Pierre de la Rue one is pretty special too - I can't remember what exactly, but isn't there some sort of canon to end all canons in there somewhere?

Just found that we've got his Opera Omnium, so I should be able to pore over the score.

I am very surprised. After checking all my usual sources I find that even Amazon doesn't appear to have any recordings of any of the L'homme armé's.

I've got score and recording (we've got Summery Jermerly and the Camford Oxerata on Naxos) of the Dufay now, so will hopefully have some ideas by tomorrow.
