The programme for this year's EIF has recently been published www.eif.co.uk

Some interesting things here, though it's certainly different to a McMaster programme. What do others think of this year's offerings?

I hope Alfred Brendel's recital willbe broadcast, since he no longer appears at the Proms.

One of the best experiences I had  from the Queen's Hall reicitals was Elisabeth Leonskaja pkayngh the late  Schubert sonatas. I'm hoping for something simliar. .

A couple of nice programmes, certainly, though it's a bit hard to see everything at once when you have to navigate through a list of artists one by one to find out what they're playing. Sad

Wasn't Brendel's reason for no longer playing at the Proms that he doesn't want to be broadcast live any more?

Ah, but will that matter if Roger Wright broadcasts Edinburgh "as live" ?

A couple of points. First, the main evening performances of the festival have never, in my memory, been broadcast live. Largely as R3 has the proms at the same time. It is true that up until a few years ago the morning Queen's Hall concerts went out live, but the 11am start doesn't fit well with regular schedules. It's also true that many people can't listen at that time (and it was quite good last year when some of those programmes went out in performance on 3 or Sunday gala).

As far as the programme goes, I found it a little disappointing (and have only actually booked for 8 or so things - compared with several times that last years). In part this is because I'm not a huge fan of new music, I imagine the programme is much more compelling if you are. Some stuff is very exciting though. I'm very glad Jansons is coming and Ades is a brave move (though I think it will sell terribly).

But I do wish we were hearing Mackerras and Runnicles.

Also, given what I've heard, next to nothing was left in place so for Mills to have put together a coherent programme is no mean feat. Indeed, I do think the whole issue of the succession was mismanaged. I also think MacMaster could have left the finances more healthy.

I think it is also fair to say that MacMaster was rather conservative in some regards - we got a phenomenal amount of Mahler and Bruckner and there was much less Mozart in the concert hall than I would have liked, little Haydn (and I'm sure there are more examples).

One thing that does puzzle me is why the Usher Hall is dark on 3 nights. Given the BBCSSO and the RSNO are rather underused, this does seem an odd choice.

One final point. There is nothing, again, from Scottish Opera.

I could be wrong, but I thought that Alfred Brendel has decided that he no longer wants any of his public performances to be broadcast or recorded.
