Radio 4 6:30-7:0 this morning on Farming Today it was very interesting to hear Sir John Eliot Gardiner talk about farming. He did mention music as well, of course!

Hi,SusanDoris,I was interested to see that you listen to 'Farming Today'.Is this a regular activity for you ,and do you have a farming connection?

I'm an early riser myself but my first listening of the day is always the last hour of 'Through the Night',good for hearing unfamiliar Czech and Polish quartets etc. though they play a good mix of standard repertoire too, often peformed by Australasian and Canadian musicians as well as European.'Tallis Fantasia' today .

No, no connection with farming at all! Although I do not go and get a cup of tea before about 6:15, I'm usually awake. I alternate between R4 and R3.

Martyn Brabbins is also a farmer. As is (dare I mention this name on these boards?) Charles Ha*******, I believe.

Obviously a popular occupation for conductors ...

I always thought farming was a pretty labour-intensive kind of operation, requiring constant and extensive time-commitment. Maybe conducting is easier than we all thought...

Yes I have, well, the first two anyway. What I haven't seen them do is shovelling s**t, if you know what I mean.

Didn't Birtwistle say he'd written Ritual Fragment for a conductorless ensemble because he thought conductors were overpaid and unnecessary?

I guess the occupations sometimes have their similarities though.

My mum is a secretary in a school and once told the music students rehearsing 'Take Five' in the room next to her office that she was very impressed because she'd never be able to count to five however long she practised for!
