So they were! Or weren't (an exact match, I mean). Closer examination shows exactly that, and that way round too. Anyway, with her auburn hair it all looked wonderful.

I've refrained so far but can't resist illustrating the recording that was made subsequently of the pieces performed at that concert.

Would you call that greenish-blue? Or bluish-green....

Hmmm. One of the Dolorosa Blues?

I was expecting to be picked up on 'auburn' actually since I wasn't at all sure about that. We chaps are never very good on these things and can get into terrible trouble when we get it wrong. Tawny? Golden?

Have just noticed that the South Bank Show ( yes, it is still going ! ) on Sunday 22nd July is about "Emma Kirkby - The Unsung Heroine". The blurb says Melvyn Bragg meets the singer as she rehearses with the Purcell Quartet and taking a masterclass in Monteverdi madrigals.

Very interesting - I hardly ever turn on the TV, so thank you very much for posting this.

I hadn't noticed it either - I don't usually notice programmes that start later than 10.30 - so many thanks!

And is was SO worth it.  I thoroughly enjoyed this programme.  I find it quite amazing that she has kept her voice for so long at the same quality that she had in her youth.

Agreed MJ, thoroughly enjoyable (though she didn't so much inform in interview, the music was superb). Inspired me to currently spin (if I may on this thread!) my Monteverdi Sacred Vocal Music with Kirkby, Partridge, Thomas and the Parley of Instruments (led by my good colleague Peter Holman. Professor Holman to me mind...!).

I loved her opinion that singing should not be far removed from speaking, that the words are the most important thing, and the music a vehicle. Every singer I have ever admired has been like that, though I suppose it does depend on the music to some extent. Her modest attitude to bad revews was admirable, too - "bad reviews usually have some truth in them". She quoted a review that likened her concerts to "an entire meal of plain yogurt", and a comment that it was "mouse music for vegetarians"! Well, I heard her very recently in a concert of Purcell and Dowland, and it wasn't at all like that - more like a  fountain of crystal drops with rainbows in them.

I think Emma Kirkby was the person who finally convinced me that I could like classical voices. I always had a problem with "operatic" singers and the huge vibrato they use. It sounds so false to me and not really pleasant to listen to. When I heard Kirkby for the first time (probably only about a year ago), it was such a refreshing sound, simple and beautiful, that I instantly fell in love with it and began exploring more early vocal music.

So imagine how chuffed I was last night to hear Kirkby saying that she had the same problems with operatic vibrato as I do  Cheesy

Definitely deserves her honour for services to ignorant music fans Smiley

Perfect, Mary! Wouldn't it be wonderful if she happened to read that. I shall now always think of it when anyone talks about her voice being 'white'.

Agreed - I think that's a lovely description of her voice. The first time I heard her was listening in the car - 1970s. She was singing 'Confitebur tibi..' and I sought out the recording as soon as I could.

I'm not so sure about her hairstyle! I would be interested to hear others' views on this.
