Be very careful what you say about Emma Kirkby's hair as it is in a very similar style to my wifes!

I think Emma Kirkby looked great. I liked her hair and her floaty colourful clothes. She obviously has naturally thick, curly hair and those of us whose hair is as straight as a plank envy such people! I don't know how old she is but I'd put her in her late fifties and I think she looked and sounded wonderful.

Though it was very straight in the earlier clips and photies of her last night, Milly. Has it begun to curl as the years progressed, or is there perhaps just a touch of artfice there? Somehow long hair on a more mature woman often doesn't quite go, especially once it starts to change colour (oh, but what a glorious chestnut it once was!)

I love her hair, and I think her looks add to her appeal. She aways looks to me as if she has stepped straight out of a Renaissance painting, so I was delighted when someone said that in the programme!
You're right about her age, Milly. I think I worked out she was 58 when I saw her in June.

With THAT VOICE Emma Kirkby could be forgiven any kind of haristyle (rather liked it myself). I caught this programme by chance and was delighted that I did. As some of you may know, I have a wee bit of a problem with the human voice but the purity of her voice is just amazing. Mary, you described it perfectly.

After a series of advertiser-pleasing SBS's, a refreshing prog. EK was eloquent and gracious about the 'yoghurt' prejudice, and it implied that there are ropey/ strained techniques/ expectations among its detractors. As a demystifying exercise for the casual viewer, brilliant, and I felt she said just enough to music lovers and musicians to convey the sheer humility that she fosters. I have a hunch that the prejudice she encountered was essentially about the fact that she achieved excellence without going to music college, notwithstanding the diligence and personal qualities involved in making this alternative route work. Oddly classicalsingers in general who care about poetry seem to get pelted similarly-Hampson, Bonney etc. Wouldnt it be great if contemporary music had a singer of this provenance batting for it,cf Berberian, Manning etc of yore?
