Not sure if this fits here (or anywhere really) but I was interested in the experiences/ views of others in HE (or not).

My venerable institution recently published its degree results - but I have no idea who got what because what appeared on the notice boards was a list of student identity numbers (known only to the individual student) followed by the class of degree attained.

The reason given for this was "data protection".

Is this common practice?

What about "freedom of information"?

That's bonkers. I'm surprised, too, knowing your venerable institution! I don't know of anywhere else that does that. We certainly don't - it's full names (yes, including embarrassing middle names) in a list by degree class. Surely it's half the 'fun' for students to see how others did too! 'Oooh, look, Suzy got a first, she sooo doesn't deserve that!'
What's more, students and faculty can look up the results of any student on the intranet pages of the website. Data protection? For what reason, in this case?

Whatever next - paper bags over the head at the degree ceremony?!

Pathetic, isn't it ? We're not allowed to put any lists of marks for whatever module happens to pass. The secretary has become fed up of giving out marks to an endless stream of students and does so no more. So for my topics, students have to come to me when I'm in. "Oh, and can I take the marks for X, Y + Z who live in the same house ?"
Grrrrrrrr.

When I was teaching at UC Berkeley, we had to make 'a reasonable effort' to assure that no one could see the grades of anyone else in the class. So it was not possible to post grades, even with student ID numbers (which could be found out anyway), nor could we return student papers by leaving them in an envelope on our office doors. This was actually a legal issue.

Paper bags-- funny one.. I hope it doesn't come to that.

Only this one ...  Roll Eyes

For some reason is reminded of (a) a certain educational establishment which she didn't attend, (b) nobody calls them "bags" anymore, and (c) a short-lived fad for paper clothing

They're coming to take me away! haha! hoho! heehee!

IN my college, there is anonymity, but it's more for the correectors than the students - all individual grades are put up on the noticeboard with student numbers, but they only put their exam numbers on their paper (well they put the other stuff down, but it's sealed with a flap of paper).  The *Degree* results, however, are all named.  Scary stuff!

It's a common thing as soon as the results come out for students to look up everyone's numbers on-line (there is a list stored somewhere that shouldn't be) and investigate who failed/&c..

I don't think the maths department messed up this year, which is a novelty (in the past two years, at least one exam has been botched, resulting in 100% for all students taking it (I was the (extremely) fortunate recipient of one of them, indeed)).
