That's the one, tinners: there's only one Cello Concerto - the one written for Rostropovich (which was also on an early NMC issue); the disc also has his last symphony (No. 10) on it. Rip that cellophane, man, give the Sacra a spin (but maybe avoid the other pieces for now....)

Ah, so it has two symphonies on it as well as the Cello Concerto? That would explain my confused but negative reaction: I remember now, I did take the cellophane off, but I read the programme notes explaining the very fetishistic-sounding construction of the other (later) symphony and they rather put me off listening to the entire disc. I hadn't realised there was an earlier and better symphony on it too.

Will put it in the CD player pronto!

Many thanks for the recommendations, Ron!

Earlier today, I re-discovered a list of interesting works that I made when Panufnik was Composer of the Week last year. Here it is:

Arbor Cosmica
Katyn Epitaph
Lullaby
Sinfonia Sacra

I will look out for the symphonies on EMI and for the NAXOS disc. I already have the Sinfonia Votiva conducted by Panufnik (BBC Radio Classics series on IMP). It's not a favourite work of mine, but I listen to it a few times a year. I can imagine that in some recordings this symphony can become a game of two halves, but in Panufnik's performance the opening movement is very exciting and the second movement comes in as a big surprise. I remember those Panufnik discs from Conifer. I don't know anything about that label. I only remember seeing a few of those Panufnik discs in an old BMG catalogue.

Best wishes,

Pim

Mention of Panufnik reminds me of the Westminster Mass composed by Roxanna Panufnik (his daughter)which played at Westminster Cathedral some years back -thought very interesting and colourful work and needs to be more well known imo  Smiley

I think (who am I paraphrasing here?) it is exactly as well known as it needs to be! Wink
