That sounds like a very good initiative to me. Shame about the branding 'Making music IN Salford' (what a world we live in...!) I can understand the comments of some of the community leaders etc., but really I think it's a bit short-sighted of them, especially as the BBC Phil will, I'm sure, make good on the promise of more education work in the area. Good for them.

It's easy to score political points on such things. What's important to keep restating as far as I'm concerned, though, is that with such matters of funding it's not an either/or business. A certain packet of money going somewhere doesn't automatically mean something else goes hungry. Fortunately we have the example of the Venezuelan sistema a little fresher in our minds nowadays: the money that goes there isn't 'wasted' from the point of view of wider society. (Obviously the BBC Phil doesn't offer quite such direct examples of bringing people out of poverty... and, er, I'm afraid taking that line rules out certain arguments against military spending, although the fact that bombs have no other purpose but to kill people might be enough on its own... )

Tim Albery's MACBETH for Opera North would be worth a Subscription on its own

She's a charming little French soprano who I first came across as Violetta for Opera Holland Park in 2001, since which time she has been the darling of Holland Park, singing Magda in La rondine, Lucia di Lammermoor, Luisa Miller and this year a quite wonderful Jenufa. This rather old article I found on Google is somewhat on the gushing side (to put it mildly!) but sums things up pretty well: http://www.rbkc.gov.uk/ohparchive/archivefeatures/2003_anne_sophie_duprels.aspReviews: http://www.musichall.uk.com/pages/sop_AD/reviews.htmI've also seen her as Mimi in the most recent Boheme revival at the Albert Hall, and she's singing Rusalka next year for Grange Park. She's a very natural performer, always completely convincing in her character portrayals, and she's got a special knack for portraying youth and vulnerability. Her Jenufa turned me into an emotional wreck... Sorry I haven't mentioned her voice - it's lovely - but she's one of those performers who grabs you by the heart. And here she is: http://www.musichall.uk.com/pages/sop_AD/resume.htm

The BBC Phil is a band very dear to my heart, having spent most of my professional life in it. Now retired, I look back on many exciting years.......and two very distinct death threats. This sponsorship from Salford ensures the continuity of an orchestra which, by dint of its lower public profile than that of the Hallé, has always been beset by a sense of unease. Bravo, Salford, for choosing the BBC Phil to boost your own image. You won't be disappointed.

Mustve been very exciting being in that orchestra. One of my favourites, especially the brass section. One of the best brass sections in the country. When they have people like jaimie Prophet as Principal trumpet, I am not surprised. He also is on the front row of the famous Black Dyke band.!!

Oh, eat ya heart out, b.b.maestro! Jamie is a most worthy successor in a legendary line. I can even remember Willy Lang, and that's going some. Then there are the trombones, and oh boy that peerless horn section.............don't get me going!
