Some historical items by the London Phil. on the Oct mag CD MM285. Elgar conducting his Elegy for String Orchestra didn't grab me, I'll listen again, but Boult conducting Elgar's orchestration of Bach's Fantasia and Fugue DID grab me and took me on a roller-coaster ride, what a belting performance!

The CD also got me listening to Mahler's Songs of a Wayfarer sung by Thomas Hampson. I would not normally listen to Mahler vocal works but I found them charming.

There's a very recent recording of Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings which I haven't listened to yet and a 1939 Beecham Espana (Chabrier) which I enjoyed.

It's an interesting enough cd but I didn't think it held together particularly well as a thought out programme. It seems more a case of "what do we have available ?" But worth getting if you are interested in the band's history.

BobbyZ,

Having now listened to all the CD I agree it is a bit of a mix'n'match selection.

I was disappointed with Tchaikovsky's 'Serenade for strings', the work that is. Now I know why Radio 2's 100 Best Tunes only ever played the Waltz  Roll Eyes Tongue

Must disagree there, really enjoyed the Serenade for Strings. Possibly for the wrong reasons - it was the first 'classical' piece I was given on LP (by my late grandfather). Enjoyed the Elgar Elegy and the Chabrier. Mind you, Mahler just does nothing for me and I don't like orchestrations of Bach, so I'd have to agree it was a bit patchy.

My grandmother used to listen to an old LP of the Waltz, in an arrangement for...

Amused to see this month's BBC CD. On the back cover, and on page 2 of the booklet, it says that the organ works featured were recorded in Toulouse, 23 & 24 Oct 2008

I'm getting a bit peed off with BBC Music Magazine's e-mail messages. Every so often they send an e-mail headed Fantastic gift from BBC Music magazine. In the e-mail there's stuff like this: *Free gift only available for subscribers within the UK and is subject to availability. BBC Music Magazine reserves the right to substitute this gift with an alternative of similar value.    BLAH BLAH

Good, I think, I'm a subscriber, so I click the link and a page opens saying Free Book and 25% discount on the magazine when you subscribe...... but I already AM a subscriber  Roll Eyes

Yeah, I got my free gift yonks ago, a set of Brahms CDs if I recall (Cleveland Orch). So why do they send me an e-mail every time they change the 'free gift'?

Maybe I should take them up on the *Free gift only available for subscribers within the UK and is subject to availability message and demand my free gift.

I agree that the Waltz is the best part of Tchaik's Serenade for Strings but can also enjoy the Elegy if my mood is right.

Used to have Barbirolli's version of this but it disappeared in one of my home moves.
