For us, I think, nothing new in this report:

A couple of times recently I've looked back at the Beeb's history, and while I'm sure the suits would say that on balance, they've "pretty much got it right" I can't help noticing some pretty glaring fumbles, such as huge tracts of original Doctor Who videotape that was "reclaimed".

Interesting they gave space to ff but then reduced her arguments to soundbite sized quotes that I don't really think explain accurately what FoR3 represent.

Don't forget the Radio 3 Birthday concert on BBC4 tv on Saturday evening, Dvorak Suite in A, the Eroica and a piece featuring countertenor Lawrence Zazzo by Jonathan Dove.

I thought they were quite fair to the for3 lot, considering they represent four hundred listeners only.  It wasn't the place of this piece to give for3 a place to set out their stall, but instead to make apposite comments.  There are many who disagree with the for3 dogma - myself, for example.

Just a thought - did anyone really expect a BBC report to include a proper section of quotes by FF and about FoR3?
No, neither did I (but maybe I'm just being cynical about journalists who work for the organisation that is being criticised).

We're talking about an organisation that couldn't be trusted to name a cat "Cookie" here, Jonathan Wink

That's correct, IRF.

Quote
Perhaps surprisingly, Mr Wright says it is "wonderful" when listeners - or ex-listeners - become "really passionate in their debate in terms of criticising this, that or the other".

"You want them to care, because if you do change something and the audience doesn't respond at all, you think, well, why are we bothering?"

I don't find that surprising at all. It's exactly the kind of thing George Bush says about "loving democracy" when asked if he's concerned about the demonstrations against his warmongering which generally accompany his "appearances" in foreign countries.

No, nothing new, John, but it still made me mad as hell when I read it.  Wodger patting himself on the back for having 50%  output of live music? Really?  Give the boy a hand. And supporting contemporary music?  Yeah, right.

I`m not surprised by the content of the interview, just rather sickened.

Worth, perhaps, a brief appearance here   Cheesy ... yes, I was disappointed to see my comments reduced to 'I don't like this, I don't like that' after an interview of about 20-30 minutes. That's partly why we/I don't go to the press very often. They never seem to get things right.

I'm interested when people say they disagree with us - as Reiner did - if they don't say exactly why (it usually turns out to be for reasons which are simply mistaken, or because a FoR3 supporter once said something stupid on a message board). It isn't about trying to tailor a station which suits individual tastes: we have 400 registered supporters (and many other sympathisers), few of whom would find the FoR3 'dogma' 100% to their taste. It's a matter of being prepared to accept, or buy into, the general position if not all the details.

I liked the phrase the Chairman used about not axeing BBC3 or BBC4 - that it would be 'retreating from audiences'. I think a lot of listeners feel that Radio 3 is retreating from them.

I didn't feel this was either the place or the topic under discussion - nor do I consider my own views on this matter to be so particularly important as to be worth rehashing here  Roll Eyes  After all, I am just one person, whereas you have 400+ signed-up supporters.  In any case it would simply reopen a discussion which has already been done to death in your own hallowed halls... so you do know what my personal views are, and how they differ from your objectives Wink  You may believe I'm "simply mistaken", of course, but actually even my own analyst is starting to address me as "Your Magnificence!" and asking when we plan escaping from St Helena...

Strangely, Reiner, I hadn't gathered what your personal views were - I thought some of your comments about the current Radio 3 reflected the FoR3 view pretty well  Wink

I understand that if there is a specific point in our position which is non-negotiable for some people, then they will disagree with us overall. But given the many issues involved it would seem strange if anyone thought we'd got it wrong on every single one (unless their initials are RW, of course).

The figure 400 is irrelevant other than to show that it's impossible even to please all our own supporters all the time and most people are prepared to compromise a little or we wouldn't be able to come up with an agenda at all. That would be the case if we only had 40 supporters.

It's a highly significant fact that the BBC thinks that this is news for the "entertainment" section. Sad
