The new Radio Times has just plopped through the letter box.  It includes a "week in the life of BBC Radio" feature, in which R3 is represented by CD Review, In Tune and Late Junction, and includes the following profound observation from Sean Rafferty:

"Live music is obviously a big part of Radio 3 because of all the concerts we record ..."

Discuss?  Huh

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

And Classical Collection, Sarah Walker keeps a copy of Radio Times in the studio apparently. Judging from odd snide comments over the months, I don't think the current Radio Times editorial team are "in tune" with R3. Certainly not the radio editor Jane Anderson, who this week bemoans the lack of female presenters on radio but praises R1 for bucking this trend. R3 must be more or less 50/50 in this respect ?

It's certainly an unfortunate gaffe  Sad   However, I think we ought to be wary of getting into the "presenter witch-hunts" which have damaged the credibility of discussions about R3 in Other Places...  although the patina could use a little buffing-up, there's quite a lot that's good going on at R3 at the moment, some of which is pointed-up in the "Bloomin' 'eck.." threads here.

By contrast, the daily fodder on Russia's equivalent station is a turgid mix of hits from the ballets, orphaned single movements of Mozart symphonies, arias from The Student Prince, and various classical lollipops...   all presented with the verve and enthusiasm of a guess-the-weight-of-the-cake competition.

Let's judge the proof of the pudding in the eating?  The packaging is ultimately peripheral Smiley

Exactamundo - R3 shouldn't take the flak for poor writing in the RT Wink
