Author Topic: When do the 'Phone-ins' Start?  (Read 579 times)

I was horrified to read in the 'Radio Times' for week 8, on page 121, under the title 'Pick of the Week', a piece about the new breakfast programme.

In it a certain RC states: "I want to interact with my audience and ease people into the day with gentle surprises. My aim is to share the music, and I like the idea of phone-ins, texts and internet message-board posters."

(I can just hear it now: "I'm ringing to ask if I can have bar 5 of the 'Karelia Suite' please, Rob. Which part do you want? Is there enough to go round?": sharing implies dilution.)

If he and R3 management really listen to message-board posters, I hope we can let him know that phone-ins and "sharing" are not on.

Anyone wanting that sort of thing can find it in copious quantities on CFM.

What is the point of R3 if it is going to go down the path of CFM? Why not go the whole hog and relay CFM on the R3 frequencies, and be done with it?

Perhaps the next time an announcer says: "This is Radio 3. It's seven o'clock ..... isn't it awful?", he/she will be referring to R3 itself, not the time of day!

R3 R.I.P.

 Cheesy

no matter how bad it is it can't be as bad as "CFM lunchtime requests" (i admit ashamedly that once upon a time i did listen to it. flog me please).

at least on R3 people will (well, hopefully) want their selected music for serious purposes. on CFM they're all designed for to alleviate the boredom of such tedious tasks as cleaning out the toilet or something....

Oh this Saturday I will have to do it!

"Hullo, we have Anna on a rather bad line!

"Dim problemi Rob, us can hear you and Gloriana and Phoebe the Goats say Heol! and Rob Rocks!"

"That's wonderful Anna, now what did you want to request?"

"Well, Tom Jones actually duetting with Cerys Matthews or anything by The Manics or Super Furry Animals.  Hullo, Hullo?  Are you there I seem to have lost the connection"

The line goes dead.

"This is a BBC Request Show, right, interactivity an' all, well I was being interactive, if Tom Jones is a prob then how about Dame Shirley Bassey?  Great frocks!  Dame Shirley Rocks!"

'Rob, it's martle. I wanted to follow up on Welshio Anna's request and ask for any trio you may have with Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey and Kathryn Jenkins. Ideally, their version of the last act trio from Der Rosenkav. Any good? No? Well how about just Tom doing Prince's Kiss then. Not on R3? Ok, KJ doing Bryan Adams, maybe with Lesley Garrett backing. No? Ok, then how about 'There'll be a Welcome in the Hillsides. No? Then...'

Line goes dead, Massenet's Thighs fill airwaves.

Hullo Rob, line went dead there for a while.  Yes, it is El Welshio back again.  Oh, you don't say.  I am being recorded for training purposes?  Well, anything that helps you Rob!

OK, sound as a pound, serious now.  Charlotte Church, can't beat her Pie Jesus, or as my Nan used to say, Bejazus, do you call that a pie!

Hi Rob. I`m calling from North Lunnon, just wanted to say what a great vibe there is on the show. Just brilliant the way you are reaching out to the people. You truly are The People`s Presenter. If you could play Kylie and Kiri doing the Flower Duet that would be soooo cool. Cheers mate.
