hello everyone, once again Smiley

you might remember me as the guy who exploded onto the message boards sometime ago....telling you about six_events....

well, its being a mad few months, the project had a lot of interest and was performed by just over 100 people (that I know of) in 26 countries across the world. I estimate that there were about 450/500 individual event performances.

So, thats over. the performance side is done, the exhibition is in a few days time.

There were a few people (and it was a very small handful) who either a) thought it was a joke or b) thought I was trying to destroy our musical heritage.  Of course, it was neither and remained a very serious project.

but, still, what does this mean? was six_events important? did it need to be done?  I think so and I say that from speaking to hundreds of people since I started (I got about 800 emails in two months! (and now im suffering with RSI))

from my results six_events managed the following achievements:

# bringing family and friends together.
# made people look at and question their surroundings.
# made people question their movements.
# inspired much writing and poetry.
# people turned off their i-pods, walkmans, and cd players and listened to the sounds of the world, focusing often on tiny details.

I personally found it very exciting, I made contact with many like minded people and realised that music really is everywhere, we dont need to go far for real art.  six_events allowed us to do an ordinary thing and question it, who ever does this usually? I know Ive never asked myself why i am walking down a road...you just do such things without thought and once you start thinking something new, more questions arise, more thoughts, more problems, more possibilities, more poetry, more wonder, more excitment, more answers and a better understanding of life.

Any questions or thoughts so far?

what now for six_events?
I kept quiet about what i would do with the results before now.

a number of things, firstly: the sound recordings will be made into an electronic composition, with images.

secondly, the exhibition this sunday

thirdly, a piece of 'proper music'

and finally another performance piece.  In the summer, I will repeat six_events, all the results i have been sent, I will walk down all those roads (for the correct duration), I will ride the buses for those lengths of time and I will sit in however many pubs and buildings I can.  For each performance (just me in london) I will have a different instrumentalist with me, playing a short piece of music, inspired by the photographs.

I am hoping to do six_events as another global project same time next year.
The idea of event scores still interest me, im writing a collection of 1000 at the moment and will be doing a happening in April.

Is anyone else writing event scores these days?

on all the flyers there were 2 words "?music/art?"  I was allowing people to make their own decisions about what the project might actually be classified as.

what is the difference between music and art? is there an artistic difference between the visual and the aural? Can you hear something you see and see something you hear?  Is music actually a form of art? (music and Art?)  can you use a word which embodies both?

So, any questions/thoughts?

I will try and be more active on here from now on, im still coping with RSI at the moment, so, sorry if I dont reply immediately! I need to take massive breaks between small bits of typing.

Very Best Wishes

Looking up "event scores" online, I find one such artist of these kinds of scores to go by the name of Alison Knowles - any relative?

i'm very familiar with Alisons work, but im not sure if we are related....It would be nice to find out though! Perhaps Beyonce might also be closely related to me and Alison (!)

I am actually using one of her event scores for my happening about 'nothing' in April.

theres a great piece by Alison, nivea hand cream...look it up. its brilliant! I want to do it myself soon, perhaps in a concert at the Guildhall.

Best

There's something I actually find very slightly disgusting about that piece, though in principle I might find it quite delightful.  Food for thought, in any event...

Dude, are you generally careful about your posture/arm-positions when typing?  I hope you get over it soon in any event.   I'm generally okay typing, but I had to transcribe something from paper for 5 minutes a few weeks ago, and my head was aching for several hours after that.
