I wasn't quite sure where to post this, but this afternoon's play was all about Frederick Delius:

Tuesday

Two Brown Eyes

By Angela Turvey

In 1884, before achieving fame as a composer, the young Frederick Delius arrived in Florida from his home in Bradford. During his stay, he allegedly fell in love with a black woman.

Frederick Delius ...... Sam Troughton
Chloe Baker ...... Syan Blake
Esther ...... Claire Benedict
Thomas Ward ...... Chris Pavlo
Jelke Rosen ...... Liz Sutherland

Director Claire Grove.

Sam Troughton (as ever) plays a good part. It covers a part of Delius' life that I was not familiar with.

It will be on 'Listen Again' if you missed it/interested in it.

Damn, (not quite in the sphere of you baptism of fire on R3, I think) tdf - Grin - I missed it as I was out in this sun of York collecting a low-price remainder copy of 'Somewhere - The Life of Jerome Robbins'.   However, I'll pursue the play on LA.

I do recall Timothy West's performance in "Beecham"; 1979; I think it was the Apollo Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue.    West imaginatively conducted an imaginary orchestra and, indeed, this was also my first acquaintance with the Delius Florida Suite, so balmy and exotic.  Several Delius anecdotes, too.

Later, the performance was taped by C4, using the Halle Orchestra, and it is a gutsy performance with so many Beecham characteristics.    I do make the occasional postings on my off-air discoveries and I did the usual air-punching when I came across the video a month or two ago.    My intention, of course, is to transfer the video to DVD.

May I, as a gesture of welcome, offer you a recording with my compliments?  You can reach me, sharpish, by using the Members facilities to send a personal message and I'll be delighted to respond in the same vein.

Welcome, again.

I heard a bit of this when I was driving this afternoon and I noticed it because someone here had already flagged it as upcoming. It didn't really grab my attention that much however, though I might grab it off LA and listen to the whole thing.

Edit: in fact I'm recording it now, will only take about 12 minutes to get the whole thing and it won't take up much hard disc space.
