I think the homepage is now a mess

http://www.bbc.co.uk/

It wasn't broken so why fix it?

I now have to scroll down for the radio links (though I notice today that the page remembered I'd clicked the R3 link, telling me Classical Collection is on now. I usually know what's on now (because it IS ON) and I go to bbc.co.uk and the R3 link to find out what's on later  Roll Eyes

Horribly cluttered and  'busy'. Far too much going on. The expression "Less is more" has obviously passed them by.

Wonder how much it cost in consultancy fees?   Huh Angry

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

Hmm - lots of gimmickry that's no doubt tricky to get to work correctly across platforms - mobile phones, PDAs, text-to-speech, etc. Also, what's the point of having all those collapsible boxes when all they leave behind is empty screen space? (Only makes a difference when you close of them across a whole row.)

On the other hand, the customise feature could be quite nifty, and would help declutter things.

Oooh, just noticed that the boxes are all movable. Actually, this is not bad ...

Yes, very annoying indeed.  Why can't they just leave things alone?

I dunno what happened there.... but when I loooked the first time, there was a horrible site with a green background.

Now there's something different (rather better, and in the same layout as the rest of the BBC site) in purple.

Have they had an urgent rethink?

The previous one looked like someone's son or daughter on work experience had been allowed to do it Sad

Actually, I'm going to revise my initial reaction to say that I think this isn't a bad revamp. The original page was pretty horrible - that was cluttered! I've checked the site against a couple of accessibility/operability sites and it scores well; much better I imagine than the old one, which had a reputation for being very hard for dyslexics, for example. It isn't perfect - I'd like the option to remove the big PR box that takes up the top right quarter of the screen, for example - but otherwise, I think it's a good job.

Reiner - you can change the backgrounds yourself: it should remember your preferences. (Click the customise your homepage button.)

I've just had a quick look after seeing these posts and my initial reaction is that it now looks like loads of other sites. Fortunately I don't often look at the BBC home page - I have all the links I usually want on my own personal home page - how much else have they changed?

A lot of website design seems to be about fashions but many designers are able to come up with something which is both functional and distinctive.

Yeah, that big block in the top right seems to have annoyed everyone on the Beeb's feedback site. Hopefully they'll give in and make that movable too so we can all shove the promo stuff to the bottom of the page.

Looks a fair bit better to my eyes, but yeah, it needs a lot of paring down.
