Well...it was 1935

I'm really pleased that BBC 4 is to follow their joyous voyage of discovery, the Sacred Music four part series; 'the big-bang moment of polyphony';   with Haydn's The Creation; Friday, 18 April (19.35 hrs).  The performance was recorded at London's Barbican; soloists Sally Matthews, Ian Bostridge and Dietrich Henschel; LSO and Chorus, conducted by Colin Davis - I bet he relishes every moment!     Sarah Mohr-Pietsch as presenter.   A trial canter for The Proms?

In turn, I'm already seduced by the eternal appeal of Haydn; the Karajan 1969 recording of the oratorio is set for a spin in the next few days and I couldn't resist the the Emerson String Quartet DG recording The Haydn Project ; a judicious selection which include the Op20, 33, 54, 64, 74, 76 and 77 quartets- a particular favourite for the past few years.  Always an effective antidote for 'the stresses and strains of the world'.  Tranquility with a fizz!

Haydn's been somewhat unfairly unperched by the Mozart-mania of the past three decades (which largely began with the Milos Forman film),  so whilst I wish Mozart no ill,  I'm delighted to see Haydn returning to the mainstream.

If only he'd written better operas... Wink

Tranquility with a fizz!

That's a wonderful phrase, Stanley.  Your own?
