Did anybody listen to lunch time concert on Tuesday 27 July?
I don't  know music of Dohnanyi much, only his name. I decided after listening to the first movement that he is "super Romantic" composer (late Romantic would be the right was to describe him I suppose).
Antti Siirala was the pianist. He is really good pianist. I am waiting to see if he is going to be one of the great pianists.

Hello TP

Just having a browse round all the areas of this forum today. Yes, I herd that piano quintet and liked it very much. I turned on just after it had started but made sure I listened to what it was at the end.  I must listen again  before it disappears. I don't know that I would buy the CD - I have far too much to listen to already.

At this moment, I am listening to my most favourite CD (Arcadi Volodos, Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 3) because for quite a while now I have been listening to Honegger, Hindemith, Messiaen (Proms), etc etc and I needed a quick burst of a favourite.

Hello Susan Doris,
I liked that Dohnanyi too. I wish  I could play piano Quintet or Quartet once in my life, but there is little chance it will happen now.
There are pieces that grab you right away (Rachmaninoff piano concerto two and three).

Dohnanyi lived a long life ((July 27, 1877 – February 9, 1960). There are composers like Rachmaninoff, Enesco, Dohnanyi that did not change their style and stayed Romantic much into XX century.
I don't know how historians will look at XX century. There were Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Hindemith, Honegger and of course Schoenberg, Berg and at the same time composers like Debussy, Ravel, Rachmaninoff, Dohnanyi etc.

Musical history would certainly have been the same if Dohnanyi had not written a note. But my life would have been the poorer too. I have always enjoyed his Nursery Song Variations (like many other people!) but my latest discovery is his Sextet for piano, string trio, clarinet and horn (thank you, Naxos).

You may know, trained-pianist, that in his lifetime Dohnanyi was considered by many to be the finest pianist since Liszt. What a pity that he left so few recordings.

Thank you for your post, rauschwerk.
I don't know any of his recordings. Also sextet sounds interesting.

I'm listening to it now ... and like it better than the first time.
I have an (old) CD with the Nursery Variations on but nothing else, and I did not know about him so now I shall hae to look and see what HMV have next time I'm there.

ETA I like the way it ends quietly.

I have yet to find a piece by Dohnanyi that i don't like.  The 4 Rhapsodies from Op.11 are superb and all the chamber works are likewiase excellent.  The First symphony is a little overblown and long but worth getting to know.  The first disc (with pianist Markus Pawlik) in the Naxos series was superb, the 2nd one was sadly ruined by very poor sound quality.
I understand Annette Servadei has recorded some discs of his piano music and i have heard 2 of them and they are also excellent.

Johathan,
Do you know if Dohnanyi has short pieces that are not too difficult or may be difficult, but not very long.
I am always on a look out for shorter and easier pieces.
