For those of you outside the UK who would like to listen to the LOD files you can forget about it and save some time. Starting with Prom 68 BBC has deactivated that service for international users. Here is an E-Mail exchange between the BBC and me on the subject:

Me:
I took your advice and tried the iPlayer page, and notice that Prom 67 is the last one listed there, although it's hard to tell since they  are still arranged in a somewhat haphazard order. I also tried to access the LOD files for Prom 69 via the link on the Program page, with the same result as Prom 68. I visited the iPlayer message board also, and see that others are getting the same result. Perhaps, if you want these files to be accessible, you may want to return to coding them the way you were prior to Prom 68, as those programs still seem to be available.

BBC:
Thank you for your email regarding BBC iPlayer.

I understand from reading your email that you would like to know when you will be able to use BBC iPlayer from outside the UK. BBC programmes on BBC iPlayer Beta are not available to international users at present because BBC iPlayer is funded by the UK licence fee.

We are hoping to expand BBC iPlayer to international users availability via BBC Worldwide at a future date. When this happens, you'll be able to access the service internationally. In the meantime, many BBC News programmes are available for international viewers at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/video_and_audio/default.stm

BBC Sport highlights are available at http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport and BBC Radio stations are available at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/ Thank you for your feedback. Do make sure you check for news on BBC iPlayer at www.bbc.co.uk

Thank you once again for contacting us.

Regards

Craig Wilson

FYI, I was able to access the LOD files through Prom 67, but starting with Prom 68 they have been unavailable to me. Apparently the live feed is still available for those who have the time and inclination to sit in front of their computers for 2-3 hours at the designated time to listen to the last 7 Proms.

So, this looks like this is the end of a beautiful friendship, and I will have to be content with sites like Radio Swiss Classic, who broadcast classical music (no folk, show tunes, sitar music, etc. and I have not yet heard a Stockhausen or Messiaen) at 128 kbps 24/7.

The BBC, always a purveyor of marvels, have truly surpassed themselves this time!
Listening to the Early Music show this morning, I heard Tallis's Spem in alium performed apparently from the bottom of a fish tank with somebody opening and closing the lid periodically.
If only I had captured the audio stream. Nobody's going to believe me.

Billy

I would persevere with trying again from time to time because when you communicate with the BBC about iplayer, they seem to automatically assume that you are talking about tv programmes, in which case the "not available outside the UK" situation pertains. But as far as listening again to radio broadcasts is concerned, the whole thing seems to be screwed this weekend for everyone, even in the UK. Monday may bring better news.

Try going to the day page of the prom required and loading from there.

It's official - you can only listen to live broadcasts of R3 now with the iPlayer.  They've turned off the feeds for "listen again" features, for listeners outside the UK Sad   A "not available in your area" message now appears instead.

I thought I was just having technical problems, but now it's been confirmed in a message on TOP - these feeds no longer work, they have been purposely discontinued.

What's the betting that this is a preliminary to charging a fee to use them?  Sad

... and they do this a week before the Proms end. Nice timing!
For the last two seasons I, along with many others, have been pushing for pay-to-listen for the Proms, in the Comment pages and in communications with the BBC. This has been met with a resounding silence from the BBC. I am convinced that literally hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of music lovers worldwide would be happy to pay for the privilege of listening to these programs. So instead they arbitrarily shut them off a week before the Proms end. At least the live feed is still available (for now).

Judging from the phrase sent out in the round-robin letter about this:

Quote
BBC programmes on BBC iPlayer Beta are not available to international users at present because BBC iPlayer is funded by the UK licence fee.

it seems fairly certain that this is a prelude to charging non-UK listeners to use the service.

I'm annoyed by this suggestion that they've somehow caught me diddling the BBC?  I'd be happy to pay a fair fee - one that reflected the quality of bandwidth offered - for the facility to listen.  However, I suspect that you won't be able to buy just a radio-broadcasts voucher - this has come down from higher in the Beeb,  where they are rubbing their hands with glee at selling online tv services... and you'll be strongarmed into an "all iPlayer services" subscription at a premium rate.

Let's face it - they haven't shovelled all those resources into building iPlayer merely for domestic Beeb users from whom no more dosh can (at present) legitimately be extracted....   them's pannin' for gold in them thar streams, them is!

Surely this is the relevant sentence from the letter Billy received:
Quote

Not sure whether that implies a per-programme fee or an overall subscription.

"Nation shall speak truth unto nation". Yeah, right.

There may also be a defensive element from the Beeb in the face of continued attacks from the various Murdoch outlets about its' web content.

It is also now more or less impossible to "listen again" as a dialup user, the real player options are harder and harder to find if they still exist at all.

If you want to diddle them and bypass iPlayer and open the files directly in RealPlayer follow the instructions in this post (Message 10) on the iPlayer Technical Issues board:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbiplayer/F7331805?thread=5756765&skip=0&show=20#p67215046

I followed the instructions and am playing Prom 68 as I write and plan to make Prom 69 my next victim. Better not tarry, though, don't know how long it will be before BBC turns off that spigot!

I've been really cheesed off with the Beeb for getting rid of the RealPlayer facility and dumping everything on iPlayer.  The latter is on the banned list at work, so I can't even listen to classical concerts while I work any more.
