I don't think that this has been mentioned on this board yet so, prompted by an e-mail from French Frank and FoR3, here it is: http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2008/09_september/01/radio3.shtml

Some modest and tentative steps in the right direction in my view.

I think this is probably better than we could have hoped for at this stage; some live concerts in the extended Performance on 3, Choral Evensong back on Wednesdays (cause for much rejoicing amongst some members here, I'd predict) and a later time for Composer of the Week repeats good changes. There looks to be an interesting range of operas for Saturday evenings (until the Met season kicks off, no doubt).

Thank you, George.    A step in the right direction, albeit after an 18 month wait.   Good to know that the element of live performance will be increased and I certainly feel placated after one of the best Proms season I can recall.   I wonder how much the success of Classic FM's evening performance,21.00 hrs to 24.00 hrs, has influenced this change?   They broadcast complete works, admittedly in somewhat compressed sound.   R3 will continue to have little appeal for me after 23.00 hrs until TNN at 01.00 hrs, if I'm still awake, but there may be an interested audience for world music etc.   Encouraging news.

Except, as has already been mentioned, the 19:00 hours start for the evening concerts remains, meaning that concert-goers as well as the listening public will suffer, and no doubt attendance figures as well.

Yes, that's looks promising stuff. Not quite sure if I like the sound of "interviews and context around its broadcasts of concerts" - that may be OK, or it might be not, we shall have to see.

I assume that Artist Focus has got the chop, as Po3 seems to have gained the extra half-hour.
