I have a cassette of Larsson's 2nd Symphony, and enjoy it. Does anyone know his 3rd? I see there is a CD of it, but I don't want to buy it without knowing whether I would like it. Is it in a similar style to his 2nd?

I don't know Larsson's symphonies, but his famous Pastoral Suite and his concertinos for various instruments are beautiful. His Violin Concerto is simply a masterpiece. What a shame we never hear it on the radio or in the concert hall.

If you like the 2nd, you will certainly like the 1st and the 3rd, both available on BIS

His style is fairly consistent throughout most of his works : only at the end of his working life did he start composing in 12 tone, and even then it is wonderfully melodious and inventive.

You mainly hear The Pastoral Suite on the radio, his symphonies are sadly under-broadcast.

If you go for the 3rd, you also get : God in Disguise, a lyrical and very memorable choral + orchestral work, mainly for a speaker of a Swedish poem. ( I expressed that badly : think of RVW The Oxford Elegy : speaker + chorus & orch!)

Enjoy :-)
