Today's Telegraph reports the death of Fr Cormac Rigby at the age of 67.  He joined the BBC as an announcer in 1965, mostly on the Home Service and Third Programme, and became R3'S Preseentation Editor in 1971.  In 1985 he left the BBC to train as a Catholic priest and was occasionally heard on the airwaves in that capacity.  One of his main interests was ballet and he regularly attended performances in London and Birmingham, often up to five nights per week.  He was suffering from prostate cancer and is survived by his sister, to whom may we send our sympathy.

Much more about the Blessed Cormac on the R3 Official, with a link to him chatting. Relive the great days!

With no disrespect  intended, he always struck me as rather inhibited on air, but (like Brian Redhead in his last years) he found in himself perhaps to follow his new vocation. I remember a strike at the BBC (around the time the
regional light orchestras were disbanded, did bectu strike in sympathy, i can't remember) when he was the lone
voice of BBC radio and did his ballet enthusiasms by candlelight. This was a cruel fate for a man of understated
devotions, and as you say rip. Good to see the newfangled lot in the other place honouring their forbear.

Interesting letter in today's Guardian:

Lovely. I agree with the sentiment wholeheartedly.

Interesting that several threads on here are referring back to a time when R3 style and content matched.
