Annual awards are generally a bit naff but the choices in the BBC Music mag for 2006 seem more interesting than many. Voted for by readers, admittedly selecting from a Beeb imposed shortlist. 38,000 votes cast apparently.

Disc of the year ( and vocal choice ) : Sibelius Orchestral Songs - Solie Isokoski
Orchestral : Shostakovich 7th - Jansons Concertgebouw
Opera : Vivaldi Griselda - Jean-Christophe Spinosi
Choral : Sibelius Kullervo - Davis LSO
Chamber : Dvorak Piano Trios - Smetana Trio
Instrumental : Enescu Piano Works - Luiza Borac
Newcomer : Haas and Janacek String Quartets - Pavel Haas Quartet
Premiere Recording : Koechlin Vocal Works with Orchestra - Holliger Stuttgart SO
Technical Excellence : Zemlinsky Lyric Symphony - Eschenbach Orchestre de Paris
DVD : Guilio Cesare - Glyndebourne

I can certainly vouch for the Koechlin being an extremely valuable release, but I can't help thinking it would be nicer if the "premiere recording" chosen had been by a living composer. Interesting to see the Eschenbach Lyrische Symphonie turning up. I've been thinking about getting hold of this recording, having never really got to grips with the work for some reason. Has anyone here heard it?

Richard

Coincidentally, the Koechlin and Zemlinsky discs are the two from that "winners list" that I have. The Zemlinsky is a fine interpretation and the sacd recording deserves the excellence award, sounds good even if you don't have sacd equipment ( I don't ! ) As to the merits of the piece, that often comes down to taste but if you know and like the Koechlin I would recommend the Zemlinsky too. Matthia Goerne and Christine Scafer sing beautifully.

Agree it's a shame there's not any sort of comtemporary category.

Richard, do you know the DG recording of the Zemlinsky with Fischer-Dieskau and Varady? That was my introduction to the work, and I grew to love it (for a long time more than Das Lied von der Erde...) from that.

No, I never heard that one. The one I have is by Michael Gielen with James Johnson and Vlatka Orsanic, but I can't say it's ever really grabbed me.

Big spender, eh? Wink

Funny, I'm rather fond of the Gielen (certainly enough so to put its limitations out of my mind while listening, although it certainly has them). I also got to know the work through the recording with Maazel and the Fischer-Dieskaus although I was pleased to hear Johnson bring a bit of weight to it that F-D doesn't quite have.

I can't honestly imagine Schäfer in it, somehow. For me some degree of bigness is needed in the soprano part. Having said that I haven't heard her in it and I wouldn't want to prejudge. Er, more than I already have.
