Paul Gambaccini used to host "The Morning Collection" on Radio 3 and although he increased listeners to the station, he was axed because some listeners felt he didn't fit in. Now, I think Paul Gambaccini is an excellent broadcaster and has a lot to offer. His musical expertise is second to none.

Would listeners welcome Paul back to the network or should he remain on Radio 2?

Well I will stick my head above the parapet and declare that I would welcome his return. I enjoyed his presentation when he was here before, and I feel sure I still would. He's no Henry Kelly. There again, he's not Rob Cowan or Sarah Walker either. ;-)

Henry Kelly! I quite like him, too! I occasionally catch him on Classic FM (Sundays 9am - midday). He's another one of my favourite broadcasters, though probably not the right kind of presenter for your beloved Radio 3! Wink

I doubt Gambaccini would ever want to go back to R3 anyhow.  An army of Colonel Bufton-Tuftons is poised with pen in hand to fight a rearguard action against insurgence from him.  That'll teach the bounder to be Canadian, eh?  Angry    With colonials as presenters, why...  you'd have just anyone listening to R3,  think of that, eh?   Fancy having to share R3 with other people?!  Perhaps there might not be enough of it to round?

More tea, Vicar?

Well, the good thing is Paul Gambaccini is appreciated on Radio 2 and regularly presents Friday Night is Music Night alongside America's Greatest Hits. I have always admired him as a broadcaster but was surprised when he was removed from Radio 3.

 Angry
Not while Julian Joseph has no gig on R3

Paul G is a walking encyclopedia of poprock innit.

i thought all this change was about being more serious, cutting out the frivolous? or is it about audience shares? why are you floating that here?

Perhaps you don't appreciate a broadcaster with impeccable musical knowledge and a great rapport with their listeners? The late Alan Freeman also had a passion for classical music and was highly respected. OK, his classical music series on Radio 2 entitled "Their Greatest Bits" wasn't as serious and highbrow as a show one would expect on Radio 3, but all-in-all, the style and presentation of the show was fantastic.

I feel sorry for Paul Gambaccini although he is now a regular presenter of Friday Night is Music Night. I doubt he would want to return to Radio 3 anyway, seeing as he was treated so badly by the core listeners!

The sad thing is that I don't think it was the core listeners who went for PG's jugular - it was a little army of petulant sulky snobs Sad

I think you might be right and for that reason, I apologise for suggesting the core of listeners were responsible for Paul Gambaccini's departure in 1997. He joined Radio 2 in 1998 presenting "America's Greatest Hits", a programme he still fronts there now on Saturday evenings. He's a great guy.

i realy like paul g's work on R2 and greatly respect his knowledge, it takes years of dedication to build that ease and familiarity. ditto david jacobs, mr smooth himself. somehow PG sounds stylistically unhappy on R3. it is a 'brand' thing not something personal. these things matter, and not just to frumpy grumps waving the telegraph or the times in the air.

He was out of place on R3 - possibly R3 has changed sufficiently that he might now not seem so totally out of place,  but as one listener (and very definately not a Torygraph reader) I was very happy to see him move to R2  - my only wish is that a few more of the 'user friendly' presenters could make the same,  one-way, move.

Was it his American accent that put you off from listening to him? Just count yourself licky Mr. Wright hasn't brought the smug and stale Simon Bates to Radio 3!  Grin
