(Another Ollie Confession:

As I've already let slip once upon a time, I can't stand it when CDDB throws up titles with everything capitalised. So I either correct the tracks one by one in my usual pedantic way (if there aren't too many) or I grit my teeth and bear it (if it's something like the St Matthew Passion with 102 tracks).

But when it throws up something in Japanese I keep it.

Am I the only one?)

No.  I correct the capitalisation as well.  Even in the St Matthew Passion (which is after all in German, so the capitals matter).  I even make the punctuation consistent and layout of titles consistet - e.g. BVW244 rather than BWV 244.

And I don't care if people say it's sad ...

Yes, I correct all the details, so they follow my desired 'house style', which makes searching for stuff much easier.

After you've edited the tracklist details, I do hope that you go to the 'Advanced' tab at the top of the page and 'Submit CD Track Names'? It'll at least give someone else the option of a more precise/accurate listing...

Didn't know you could do that - I will make a point of doing so in future.

OK, IGI, you told me about this a year ago.

But how do you know which option to chose when you pop in a CD, and it asks you which set of texts to download with only the artists' details, IIRC.  Once you have chosen one, and seen its NBG how do you open the other option.

(If you're a dyed in the wool pedant like O. Sudden, Gent. of course you write them all out, but I can't be bothered.)

Is there any way once you've chosen from a couple of possible listings proffered by CDDB to change your mind and try another one?

Many a time I've been given a couple of possibilities and chosen one only to find it ridden with capitals. And then asked myself the above question...

I see DB has just asked the same question!

No, I don't automatically type out everything; I don't need everything 'just so' as some do and can gladly cope with movement numbers in Roman or Arabic numerals, the information in different orders, colons instead of dashes or whatever. But It's When Everything Is In Capitals That It Just Looks Awful To Me. That's Where I Draw The Line. Or Rather Type The Titles.

Wot's an iPod? Wink

Determined Minidisc User

btw, as I've no idea how they work, how do you guys get recordings from the radio onto your iPods and edit them? Or perhaps edit them first and then transfer them?

Er, actually I record broadcasts on to minidisc.  Grin

(Or rather I used to, because the new set-top box that our old friends Virgin Media supplied does not have an audio line-out, and as I have mentioned here before I have no FM or terrestrial TV, owing to proximity to the South Downs.  I've tried using Audacity to capture internet relays but the quality is total carp ...)

I have had my 8gb nano for a while now and find it fab!! it is very small and carries enough for most uses- music and audion books + podcasts ( oh..and I play games too  Roll Eyes
I finally plucked up courage to put my 30gb ipod video back into itunes and I have reinstalled lots of things , so all is well with the world.
I do now however record with audiograbber and put my music files on my external hard drive so I will not have the disasters with itunes I have had before. All is well with my mp3 world  Grin

I use a minidisc for recording concerts ( with permission of course) for example a couple of recent recitals by someone known to me etc. Wonderful . I use a sony mike and a pretty old sony minidisc. I do however put them ( ..or should I say someone else does this?) on cd then into mp3 for my ipod.

Hope I'm OK to bump this one again - I followed HH's link from the Happy Room and just wanted to pop something on the end.

This thread has been an interesting and useful read as I'm gradually moving towards the i-route away from Sony's evil piece of nastiness masquerading as their 6 gig walkman.  I cannot stress enough how thoroughly everyone should avoid ever owning one of these things.  They're pretty, oh yes they're very pretty, but they're also evil.

This is mainly a problem with their proprietory software "Connect Player".  It's slow, it takes up ALL your processing memory, it crashes regularly and when you try to close it it thinks there's still one open so you have to re-boot, it converts everything into a silly format that's no use to anything else (and even if you try to move its own files back onto the player after an absence it 'converts' them again), it won't connect to Gracenotes on my laptop even on a broadband connection, it takes hours to synchronise and if you accidentally unplug it before it's finished it just wipes the damned thing.  Now it's also started cutting the ends off tracks (which is very confusing if you've bought the new Portishead album, one track of which is actually meant to sound like that) and I hate it.  Basically.
