On the subject of things to avoid, miss out the iriver H10.  Whatever anyone says about the wonderfulness of ewarlier models, it doesn't apply to this awful piece of ****.

A - thanks for the recommendation.  I'm probably after something a bit bigger storage-wise though.  Is audiograbber free software?  And is it a total alternative to iTunes or do you still have to upload the stuff via iTunes?

I have to say I wasn't enamoured with the idea of having to use iTunes so a drag-and-drop alternative would be fabulous.  Smiley

My iPod had a massive crash on Thursday. Completely froze mid Doctrine of Similarity.
Remembered the way to reset it, as I have before with no problems, but found that it had completely cleared its memory.
Now this is a good thing in some ways. I've had an awful lot on the memory to which I don't listen so it's good to have a clear out.
But at the same time, it's annoying because almost all my music is on my external hard drive which I haven't yet set up to use with this new laptop. So it's not that easy.
Have a horrible feeling that this latest development is a sign that it's getting old. After all it must be about 3 years old now and that tends to be the magic age of failing warranties doesn't it?

I don't have a problem with iTunes and I quite like it. Rather frustrated that I have to use Windows Media Player at work for audio.

As it happens, I got the ipod rather sooner than I expected (ie Saturday) so I didn't have much time to research and just launched into iTunes.  It seems fine so far.  It certainly couldn't have been any worse than Sony's Connect Player.  I donated my Sony to a friend and spent last night at her place trying to rip her current favourite Brazilian music onto it.  It served as a more than adequate reminder of why I got annoyed with the damn thing in the first place.  ("No - I said to put the whole album on... not just that one track.... why haven't you... error... well why didn't you tell me that then before I disconnected the player you stupid....Aaaaaaargh!")

She has no real means up updating it now though, so she can just have the pretty thing without the stupid thing and about 900 tracks she didn't have yesterday morning...

Can't stand iTunes, in particular the way it only goes in one direction. Why on earth can't I just drag the files from my CD into a folder instead of importing them to a library I never use and then dragging them over? (I have the pod and I have a CD player, so of course I never play things from the computer because it's not as convenient as one and sounds crêpe compared to the other.) And why on earth is there only one level of nesting on the pod itself? Might have made sense when they only went up to 1GB or so but on an 80GB thing the list of playlists just gets ridiculous. You need to be able to nest folders... (or, er, is that actually possible? If so someone please tell me how!)

Thank goodness at least for senuti when I need to get things back off the pod.

Those aren't problems unique to iTunes though are they? Is there an mp3 player that allows you to rip straight to it?
And as for the levels of nesting, again that's an iPod problem not an iTunes problem surely? Thoroughly agree that Senuti is a godsend.

Ooh that looks worth knowing about - thanks.

I would have thought any MP3 player with drag and drop file loading would recognise further nesting - iRivers seem to be a good bet.

Several days ago I got an iRiver T60 (4GB) that uses a single AAA
battery. Its color display is nicer, it has fewer options, and it's
menu system is a bit trickier to navigate than the G3's. Although I
haven't used it very much so far, I've also been able to copy files
and folders to it (nested folders as well), and so far haven't had
any problems playing audio books in the proper order.

The other half has an iRiver H120 and loves the drag and drop functionality.  He's also loaded Rockbox http://www.rockbox.org/ to get proper gapless playback, but I don't think I've got the guts to try to do that to my ipod.  Shocked

I am totally bemused by all of this.  I just bought an ipod and did what it says.  I don't understand what this library is - the stuff under "My Music"?

I might get an external hard drive, though from what I have heard here.  How do you plug them in?

I might be misinterpreting your question, but the library is just what's on your PC as opposed to what's on your ipod.  If you synchronise it should be exactly the same.

I think most of them just use a USB port.

Then how do I update my ipod with an external drive, as they both need USB ports.  My laptop tends to go sulky when I use more than one port, and I've never tried on the pc.  I might investigate this, though.

I've currently no desire to get an ipod and I've never used itunes so I can't really comment about it.

Organising all my music/recordings, plus backups, between my desktop, laptop, external hard-drives, minidiscs, CDs is a bit of a nightmare, so if I were convinced that an ipod would make it easier, I'd get one straight away - but I'm not.

I use SonicStage for all my minidisc recordings and MediaMonkey for mp3s etc on the desktop and Rhythmbox on the laptop.

I use an external hard drive to store all my music files.. downloaded with audio grabber. The ipod doesn't need to be plugged in when I do this. I move files to itunes .. than plug my ipod in to update having removed the ext hard drive by then, so only one usb needed.
