In recent months I have had repeated problems relating to lack of space on the C: drive of this laptop. I have an old (v. 6) fully registered W98SE compatible copy of Partition Magic, but Power Quest appear to have gone out of business and a replacement which runs under Windows XP would cost in the region of £30+. However, thanks to a current magazine cover disc, I have found a linux-based program, "PartedMagic 2.1", which repartitions drives as least as well as Partition Magic did. Better still, it is freeware (though they do request that those who find it useful donate at least $2 to the programming team). Just in case, I moved everything from my D: drive (the only other partition on my main hard disc) to an external USB2 hard disc before using PartedMagic. The program can be downloaded in various forms, the principal two being an iso image for burning to CD-R, and a version for use with a USB memory stick. I did not have much luck getting the USB memory stick version to boot, so then tried the CD-R version, and that worked a treat. I now have an extra 7 GB of space on my C: drive, and have moved all the stuff I temporarily shifted to an external drive back onto now smaller D: partition.

Highly recommended. No need to install Linux on any hard drive, by the way. It runs from the CD-R and RAM.

I use GParted, the Gnome Partition Editor, also Linux based. You can download it for free and burn the iso as a live CD ie you run it off the CD. I found it to be excellent and it sounds similar to what you've used Bryn.
