With sadness I have to report that it doesn't seem to have been the problem.

 Undecided

You realise about 5,000,000 people, in the Greater London area alone, are having this exact same problem? Try Googling:

Quote
you either have Java Script switched off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. GET THE LATEST FLASH PLAYER HERE

There's probably a quick, simple solution. The main thing is not to do anything drastic. As it's a major problem the internet's now infested with entrepreneurial nerds trying to make money out if it, and giving complex 'advice' involving getting knee deep in registry files and God knows what else after, of course, you've bought their wretched, and probably useless or damaging, product. Avoid like the plague.

Are all your Java buttons ticked in your browser(s)?

Internet Explorer:

>> Tools
>> Internet Options
>> Advanced
Tick Java boxes, restart browser

Firefox:

>> Tools
>> Option
>> Content
Tick Java boxes, restart browser

You may need to reboot the machine to get the full effect. Finally, have you cleared the cache and then re-booted?

I'm prepared to try anything, Andy:

And thanks to both you and Philidor for advice re Java. As far as I can see I've got all the appropriate 'Enable' buttons ticked.

And no, I hadn't realised until you pointed it out Philidor that I am far from alone in having this problem. I'm ashamed to admit I find this knowledge rather comforting. I will now set off exploring what the various links say, exercising due caution before I actually do anything.

Thank you for all the help!

Got there!!!!

The answer was in that last link you gave, Andy, <manlyembraceandgratefulslaponbackwithyellowrubbergloveson>.

The secret is that you have to uninstall and scour out all traces of the previous version of Flash  -  using a special Adobe Uninstaller which you have to install  -  before you install the new version. It's secret (to us non-computer nerds anyway who don't have this sort of information coded in our genes) in that there is nothing in the installation instructions that tells you this, or suggests it when the installation manifestly hasn't worked. As I said, it just tells you that you have successfully installed it  - when you haven't.

My apologies for wasting everyone's time on this if the solution should have been obvious.

For those who are also having difficulties with installing Adobe things, I hope this might be the answer to your prayers too.

(Quite where it has installed it is also a bit of a mystery but I'm not going to worry about that now.)

Back to watching otters holding hands on Youtube ... Woohoo!

Glad to have been of help George, though that solution certainly isn't obvious to me for one. My bill will be in the post.

You might like to have a look at an in-depth analysis of a very convincing but fake anti-malware program - designed to part you from your money and probably to steal your credit card details. It's a long but quite fascinating article.

Nooooooooo, Andy. You have taught me too well. I'm not going to click on that link without personal references from at least two vicars and a signed and witnessed pre-nup agreement. And only then with a pair of heavy-duty Marigolds on.

I hate to mention this, given all of George's problems with Flash, but there's a major new version of Flash Player which it's probably worth upgrading to.

see http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/10/16/adobe_update_thwarts_clickjacking/

I was on 9.0.124.0 and I've just installed 10.0.12.36 in Firefox without any problems and am playing Hendrix on YouTube.

Get it from http://www.adobe.com/go/gntray_dl_getflashplayer not from a pop-up that says you need to update Wink

If you want to see what version you've got, see http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/

Edit: you need to install Flash in each browser you use, I've just tried to install in IE and it hasn't worked, no doubt I've got the same problems as George had. As I rarely use IE, I'm not going to bother now.

2nd edit: I have bothered and I've just updated Flash for IE. As George found out, you have to run their uninstall programme first, with IE closed. Then re-open IE and install Flash again and you should get 10.0.12.36

3rd edit: the uninstall got rid of the Firefox version as well, so I had to re-install it Angry

btw the Hendrix is him playing Wild Thing, then setting fire to and smashing up his guitar http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=hfPgj4bviKY
they don't make 'em like that any more!

Although the internet is great i get really annoyed by all these sites constantly upgrading - this is because i am a computer nerd and i guarantee whenever i have to upgrade something goes wrong usually incomprehensable error notices - i have avast antivirus software and it prompted me to uptdate but when i tried got all kind of error notices - maybe i am blaming my own shortcomings nevertheless it makes me really cross  Cry

Looks like a programming error on the Radio 3 website. I'm getting this displayed in the top right of the page in Firefox, but not IE:

On Radio 3 Now
You have an old or no version of flash - you will need to upgrade your present plug-in to view this content.

and, as I've said earlier, I have the latest version of Flash installed. Presumably they're doing the test for the plug-in incorrectly but I can't be bothered to check through the code for them, or even report it.

Sounds like they've learned the Microsoft Method: never mind the bugs, get it on the shelves and let the users find the bugs for you.
