I have been going round in circles on this so thought I would post a cry for help here in case there is an obvious answer to what I am doing wrong.

Going about my lawful business this morning trying to look at recommended links on YouTube I got a message saying:

Quote
Hello, you either have Java Script switched off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. GET THE LATEST FLASH PLAYER HERE

I don't seem to have Java Script switched off so I went and 'got' the latest flash player by clicking the button and doing all the things it asked me to. There was even a message saying I had successfully installed it. Hurrah, I thought.

But going back to YouTube to play something I got a message saying:

Quote
Hello, you either have Java Script switched off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. GET THE LATEST FLASH PLAYER HERE

So, I ... <ditto>

And have been going through the same fruitless process intermittently throughout the day.

Any tips on where I might be going wrong would be very gratefully received.

I also get that message on Youtube because I've got Flash blocked almost everywhere and I also block Javascript almost everywhere. But you're probably not doing that George. Also I can allow Javascript on Youtube and I then get an option to run Flash to play the vid - and it works! Does Flash work elsewhere or is it just on Youtube? Have you restarted your PC?

Thank you for that, Andy.

No, it's not just on Youtube. I get the same or similar message everywhere else too. I was even greeted by a message from Norton/Symantec this morning telling me that I had 'an issue' that needed addressing in not having the latest version of Flash.

And yes, I have closed down and re-started the pc on each occasion.

The problem seems to be that Flash (or the latest version/update) just doesn't instal itself, even though it appears to say it has. Presumably if it has installed it would be on the list of 'Currently Installed Programs' in the control panel? But it isn't.

Confession. This all started yesterday when I responded to a pop-up message from Adobe saying that the new version of Adobe Flash was ready to instal(l) and that I should do so. So I did. Have I been a foolish person?

Very foolish George Cheesy Are you sure that the pop-up was from Adobe? lots of nasties try to get you to install the "latest Flash", which turns out to be nothing of the sort. Don't want to worry you.

How do we know if one of these messages is the goods or not, Andy?

Very foolish George Cheesy
I know, I know, I was a silly-billy.

But I've done a full virus and spyware scan with my highly expensive Norton thingy and it came up with a clean bill of health. I hope that means what it appears to mean.

Apart from the first time Undecided I've been trying to dowload Flash from the Adobe site itself and the same thing seems to happen. It somehow just fails to install.

Possibly to add folly to folly, I see an advert has just appeared at the top of this thread

Quote
"Fix Flash Player. Problems solved in 3 minutes. www.fixregistrynow.com."

Would I have lost all presence of mind and sense of reality if I tried that?

What I find really puzzling is that if I go to the Adobe Website Support Centre it tells me
Quote
"You have version 9,0,124,0 installed"
which, as far as I can tell, is the one I am after. And yet if I then toddle over to Youtube and try to play something I still get that message:

Quote
Hello, you either have Java Script switched off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. GET THE LATEST FLASH PLAYER HERE

So <embarrassed cough> maybe, I thought, I have got Java Script switched off after all? But I've looked under 'Tools ... Internet Options ...' and against 'Scripts of Java applets' the 'Enabled' button is ticked. So that is as it should be?

I await Andy's reply to that one with interest.

This may well be utterly irrelevant, if so, then apologies but ... whenever I open anything Adobe related it seems to, temporarily, bugler things up. It's a fight to get out as well. It won't let go Angry I was under the impression that I had updated my Flash player some weeks ago. Apparently I haven't, even though I pressed all the right buttons. Don't think I can be asked now since I don't have a problem with YouTube.

You don't, or not easily. My advice is to never download anything from a prompt like that - go to the website and download from there.

I know you're only joking George, but never buy software from an ad, even less so if you get a pop-up on your machine. Get a recommendation from someone you trust eg Jack Schofield in the Guardian is very good. If you do want to download something you've found - which I've certainly done - Google like mad to find if there are any recommendations or warnings about it.

So <embarrassed cough> maybe, I thought, I have got Java Script switched off after all? But I've looked under 'Tools ... Internet Options ...' and against 'Scripts of Java applets' the 'Enabled' button is ticked. So that is as it should be?

To add to the confusion, Java and Javascript are not the same thing at all! Java applets are little programs used by eg your BT digital vault, whereas most sites include a bit of Javascript, often embedded in the HTML, which is just interpreted by the browser. I don't know a lot about IE as I rarely use it, so I'm not sure where you can switch Javascript off and on.

When I look at my add-ons in Firefox I get "Shockwave Flash" 9.0 r124 which is the latest version.

I can't find where the version is given in IE, if it is, but they should both be one and the same.

I should update it if I were you Mort. Flash is notoriously insecure, there were major flaws in it recently which I'm not sure have been fixed yet - hence one reason why I use Flashblock in Firefox (it's also to stop ads since they're what Flash is mostly used for).

I remember having some difficulties updating Flash myself.

On the subject of the Flash player, this is almost a Grumpy Old Rant.
More than a year ago I went to try and play one of my favourite online games, which coincidentally requires Flash player. The site told me I needed to update my Flash player, so I went to Adobe and dutifully tried to update.
Then I found the troubleshooting link at Adobe, which was absolutely no help. Just a forum full of people apparently experiencing the same problem.
I have since given up on trying to update Flash and regard anything Adobe-ized with a certain amount of mistrust.

That sounds like a cookie problem. Have you tried deleting them?

Thanks for all the advice, chaps. Goodness, it's a digital jungle out there for someone who can hardly tell his scripts from his applets.

I hadn't thought of clearing out the cookies, Philidor (surely there can be nothing as wholesome as Applet Cookies?) but I have now done so. With sadness I have to report that it doesn't seem to have been the problem.
