Good herrings! I haven't been in here since it was all reorganized. It all looks very silvery and flashing-lights-y. If I sit down in the wrong place will I blow up the world? or start the Large Hadron Collider? or is there a difference?

Can anybody recommend a workable alternative to Real Player that is
  • Open source (I hate being tied to proprietary formats)?
  • Freeware (the purse got run over by a steamroller last week)?

Thank you. How long has that ciggy butt been floating in that coffee cup? No. Don't tell me. I don't think I want to know.

Deep-ends wot ewer trying two do Kitty.

I put Real Player onto my Ubuntu machine because it has a linux version and it supports mp3 - I mostly use the Ubuntu supplied players now though eg Rhythmbox.

Some of the BBC stuff still seems to require you to use Real Player, though they seem to be getting away from that.

Winamp supports flac so I use that and MediaMonkey is good at organising/playing your computer files though it seems to be crap at playing CDs.

I've briefly looked at Songbird, which is an open source music player, though it still seems to be in beta. If it works I'd like to standardise on it for both Windows and Linux.

You do know that Windows already comes with a built-in media player that you don't have to pay a penny for? It'a what I use for CDS, mp3s, etc.

Although, thinking about it, it doesn't play Real Audio format, does it?  Undecided

Humblepologies Andy and IRF. It is Listen Again that is giving me grief. The Beeb says I have to have RP, but surely there must be other ways to listen to streaming Real Audio? I just object to the all-embracing t's and c's of the RP license. (not to mention the junk that it dragged in with it last time I installed it)
