So, if it's achieved nothing else it's made someone curious enough to do some delving and listening.

A good result then!  Grin

Well MJ, the thread did the same for me, but beware, when I expressed disappointment and questioned the clip's musicality then I was sneered at and accused of having blindspots  Cheesy

Have to say I did go blind (saw no more) after 3mins 20secs  Smiley just when it was getting exciting  Roll Eyes

Yeh but John, that's no kind of real example. After all, we've known for some time that you have Van Gogh's ear for music.

after reading this thread from beginning to end just now, I can truthfully say I'm all agog and determined to investigate AB's music.

LOL
Well check it out: as I write, you have three minutes before Monsieur Alyn Shipton expounds on this controversial dude:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/jazzlibrary/pip/848tx/

Or the podcast stays there for one whole week.

But note, Bryn, he may have cut off his ear but he did not lose his hearing, just had to cup his hand  Wink

Thanks I'm listening now.

Well, so far certainly sounds like jazz to me. That being jazz as I have always understood the term to describe.  However, best press on....

Erm.. Undecided  I wouldn't describe this current piece as jazz.  I think whoever commented that some of it is jazz and some of it isn't is probably correct.

Oops! I went out and missed the programme but I will try to give it a listen tomorrow. There I was hoping for a little friendly banter when I got in and everyone's decamped to the land of Nod. Sweet dreams all.

And now I'm here and you're not. That's no good either, is it. Oh well, think I'll put on a bit of Composition No 286 (my favourite) to keep me company.

Night all.

I'm not sure I have much to say really, except two points. Firstly that it did not fit what I understand to be 'free jazz', about which I've already commented. That selection was considerably more structured than my experience of the latter and - secondly - though I can't say why in musicological terms, what struck me was a classical 'feel' to it: patterns, movements and such, but expressed in a 'jazz' way. I can see why people find him interesting, in the same way people find modern classical 'interesting' (though its not something I share).

I totally agree with that Greenfox, after listening to the programme.  However it doesn't really matter if it's jazz or not - it's really good music, IMHO anyway.

You think it was 'classical'?
It certainly felt that way to me, but not being a classical buff I can't really substantiate that.

Yes, it came over to me in a very classical way.  Rather too formally presented for true jazz.

If you like that one I think you'll find the enormous Iridium box set of great interest.

I keep thinking that too, Richard, and my credit card keeps saying no. I sorely wish I'd leapt on it when you lot on the BBC boards first spotted it for £30 or whatever it was at the time ... Cry

And here, amazingly, is AB together with Hugh Ragin, Ray Anderson and Marilyn Crispell playing the first nine minutes of the beautiful Composition 98, one of my favourites.

I thoroughly enjoyed that; if you cats like that, apart from the obvious avenues to explore in AB's own discography, you might also be interested in a recording which Braxton conducted of John Lindberg's composition, Trilogy of Works for 11 Instrumentalists.

There are places where the Iridium set is available in mp3.
