Good to see that SME's Quintessence has been rereleased on Emanem - here's an extract from an e-mail I got from them earlier this week:

SPONTANEOUS MUSIC ENSEMBLE ‘Quintessence’ (1973/4) - EMANEM 4217 2-CD set
whole of the sensational 85 minute concert featuring the quintet of JOHN STEVENS (percussion & cornet), DEREK BAILEY (guitars), KENT CARTER (cello & double bass), EVAN PARKER (soprano sax) and TREVOR WATTS (soprano sax) - a classic of free improvisation, about which the following has been written: 'This 1974 concert is one of the best examples of the SME on record.' 'I think that this 1974 performance is just about the finest single performance of free-improvised music that I know of. For me there is more MUSIC and IMPROVISATION here per second than just about any other recording that I've ever heard.' 'A masterpiece of collective improvisation - belongs in every music collection.' 'One of the most beautiful improv sets I've heard.' Also include are some slightly earlier improvisations by the trio of STEVENS, CARTER & WATTS and the duo of STEVENS & WATTS. Reissue of Emanem CDs 4015 & 4016 - the quintet concert was originally issued on Emanem LPs 3401 & 3402. 135 minutes.

All we need now is for Karyobin and The Longest Night to be reissued.

I'm also going to investigate George Lewis' Homage to Charles Parker, which got mentioned earlier on this board somewhere - I can't find it now, there are too many sub-rooms.

Saw the heading of Quintessence and thought somebody might be posting about Raja Ram !

More on topic, I only ever read about SME in old Melody Makers but remember seeing Trevor Watts Moire Music at Bracknell Jazz Fest.

Jeez yeah, there was a time you could buy the goddam Melody Maker & it would have PAGES of jazz & not just jazz, improvised music & all in between. AND about Quintessence, too, Ahem..

I remember stuff from the early 70s like "Frith: A Bailey Copyist?" etc. provoking, like, irate letters to the editor for chrissakes. What larks eh? Bloody PAGES on Company, Braxton, stuff like Ovary Lodge, Brotherhood of Breath, proper writing... Richard Williams, Brian Case, Steve Lake, Max Jones...

Man! Who even WRITES about this stuff (& todays equivalent scene) in any depth, eh? EH? BLOODY EH?

eh?

I don't think Victor writes for it these days.  Sad

There are often some interesting bits of writing to be found on allaboutjazz.com, and at Massimo Ricci's "Touching Extremes" http://spazioinwind.libero.it/extremes/touching.htm, and Paris Transatlantic Magazine http://www.paristransatlantic.com/magazine/main/home.html

Yerp, Paris transatlantic is pretty essential, as is bagatellen.

But Touching Extremes is new to me.

cool, dad.

What I sort of miss is the inky stinky weekly crackle of the paper...
