A quick  Cool for the Kenny Wheeler quartet gig (Stan Sulzmann, Chris Laurence, Clive Fenner on drums).
While you could hear a certain tiredness in KW's sustains, the mercurial phrasing is as ever brilliant and the way the ensemble floats cannily among the implications of his charts boggles. A great sardonic Tango called 'Sly Eyes' new to me-other moments breathtakingly beautiful , low-key and energised at the same time. Particularly nice that the place was packed and not just with full-on fans, but locals who listened intently. I thought Leonid Brehznev walked in at one point-Ursine double breasted local  in fact. The Lord Rookwood is slightly down-at-heel, but the function room to the right is the perfect size and feel for a jazz club, which it now is weekly. Highly reccomended night, worth the trip..
