So Stan finally gets honoured.
I'm glad that the old fella gets this recognition. I read a jazz history book recently, can't remember the name of it, and was somewhat bemused to see Stan got no mention depite its covering the British scene a few decades ago. For whatever reason, it seems he never got a high or celebrated profile.

Not sure I agree though with this nonsense of Empire honours and what it all rests on, reminding me of a comment film maker Akira Kurosawa once made when he was being honoured at one of the occasions they do that. "Self congratulatory nonsense" he said, if I recall it correctly. Still, I'm glad to see Stan get recognised as an important part of British jazz.

I may be wrong greenfox, but wasn't there a petiton to get Stan Tracey honoured?

I think the fact that a petition was in existence proves a lot of people thought he was worthy of an honour.  Perhaps the Honours system should rely on the vote of the people?

Yes, on the official No 10 Downing Street website I believe ( not instigated by anyone at No 10 I hasten to add, I think the plebs can place their own petitions there ) I even "signed" it, not that I felt that strongly but it hardly took much effort and was worth trying to get some recognition. Maybe BBC4 will repeat the documentary on Stan Tracey from a few years back ? Or do something with Under Milk Wood ?

Yeah there was indeed a petition, but wasn't it in the nature of addressing the problem, if you see what I mean? I thought I'd returned the book to the library but actually I've still got it: 'Jazz', by Mervyn Cooke. Most of the big names are there, and the Brit scene is covered, but there's no mention of Stan.

Incidentally what about Under Milk Wood? - I don't actually know what kind of impact it made, and what kind of repuation it made.

I think Under Milk Wood made quite an impact ( in the relative sense that any British jazz album could make an impact ) One of those albums like Joe Harriot's Indo - Jazz stuff that appealed to eclectic tastes outside the strictly jazz crowd without attracting any accusations of selling out. Stan Tracey has as high a profile as any British jazz player of his period I think, who did get a mention in the Mervyn Cooke book ?

Timeline for the 60s in the back of the book:

Ayler, Coleman, Trane, Dolphy, Evans, Getz, Thad Jones, Roland Kirk, Lee Morgan, Peterson, Rollins, Sun Ra, Cecil Taylor

For the 70s:

Braxton, Don Cherry, Chick Corea,  Charlie Haden, Hancock, Jarrett, McLaughlin, Wayne Shorter, Zawinal

And Stan isn't even mentioned in the entire book. Cooke is a Brit, a music academic and teacher.

Green fuse, has no dominion, all that stuff innit? Did it at A level; even went past his stomping ground a few years ago while driving down from Snowdonia to Carmarthen. That any good?
