Intrigued by a brochure from West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds, today, which advertises a new play by Clare Brown: Don't You Leave Me Here.
The year is 1906 and the play is set in the back room of a brothel in Storyville, New Orleans. Ferd "Jelly Roll" Morton and Tony Jackson earn what little money they can playing for Gypsy Schaeffer and her girls, whilst desperately dreaming of a better life.
Renowned actor and musician Giles Terera and new talent Kelsey Brookfield take on the roles of two of musical history's legendary characters in the World Premiere of this evocative play.
Featuring classic songs by Jelly Roll Morton, including Animule Dance and The Crave, the play follows two of the originators of jazz from the greasy creep-joints of New Orleans to the hot clubs of Chicago.
Playing dates: 27 September to 18 October: Evenings at 7.45pm; Sat matinees 2pm
on 4 and 18 October. Box Office 0113 213 7700 or online
