Mr Da Jazbo is enthusing about Lonnie Johnson on the other board after hearing his playing with Louis Armstrong last night on Jazz Library. I know Calum also gave a good link to a vintage jazz site a month or so ago with Lonnie Johnson music. Anyway, I am not a member of the other site so am posting here. There's a good snippet about Lonnie J from an unexpected source, the book "White Bicycles" by Joe Boyd. If the whole book's not your thing, nip into Waterstone's and read chapter two, pages 13 to 17 about a teenage Boyd booking Lonnie to play in a friend's front room for fifty dollars when Lonnie was working as a cook circa 1960.

If you have zero interest in sixties folk and psychedelia, forget the book but buried amongst that, it does have several other good jazz anecdotes from his time working for George Wein ( especially Coleman Hawkins and Freddie Hubbard ) and his involvement with Brotherhood of Breath in London.  Scan the index in Waterstones ?

Calum: This board has changed wherein I can't just send  you a message.

Maybe it's me?

Anyways, just wanted you to know - but you prob. DO have - that Ran Blake's All That Is Tied sessions are available for downloading on emusic.com

But, as I said, you might have it.

BobbyZ i do apologise for the unfortunate typo, always a risk with me, and i read twice without seeing it! i hope i have caused no ill feeling, it was a simple error.

Chas yes, i got the All Is Tied album from emusic last year and it is still blowing me away; for the benefit of any passing classicists RAN blake is worthy of serious investigation; undoubtedly a jazz pianist but his music making may be much more amenable to the classically focused ear.

The typo was taken as just that calum ! I wasn't sensitive enough to think that I had merited a booby.
