Charlie Parker in his last years put a great deal of effort into what are known as his 'with strings' tracks. He won acclaim at the box office and made some hard earned and very needed cash for sure; but this work meant much more to him than that. The Complete Charlie Parker With Strigs: The Master Takes is an absolutely essential aspect of his work in his own mind. It is oft ignored or criticised by the somewhat adolescent purism of the jazz fraternity. Nonetheless imho it is amongst his finest playing anywhere, and highly accessible to  less jazz-tuned lobes.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Strings-Master-Takes-Charlie-Parker/dp/B0000046WK you can listen to samples here. Try Just Friends  first it is an acknowledged masterpeice.

Apart from this i would heartily endorse the suggestions of Alyn Shipton, an encyclopedic magistrate of jazz.
