Yes grippie,

It will be strange for me, driving home from the football, not to be hearing Geoffrey Smith. How many years has it been??  Undecided

At 5.00pm today, Jazz File offers a half hour mixed bag from ODJB to Madonna!! Shocked

I am, though, pleased to see they will be comparing the Lew Stone band's arrangement of Blue Jazz (3 Nov 1933) with the Casa Loma Orch (25 Jul 1932). The latter I have not heard (don't own) for years. I've just checked the Brian Rust discog and he notes the Stone band arrangement as a joint Lew Stone and Stanley Black, never realised that. I hope many will be impressed with the British arrangement and the playing of British musicians of the time, but I expect I will be blown away by the Casa Loma  Wink

Predictably Jez Nelson offered for comparison clips of the Casa Loma and Lew Stone recordings of Blue Jazz, and he quite rightly stated that most people prefer the British version arranged by Lew Stone and Stanley Black, though it would have been nice if Jez had credited Stanley Black AND the hot trumpet and hot trombone of two British musicians Nat Gonella and Lew Davis.

I'll just take the opportunity here of directing this group to my own webpage devoted to trombonist Lew Davis, where several vintage clips can be heard:

Egad, John, man!

I never twigged that was you >> I been on that site often... y'know, lookin' things up & all that. Infact, I found this page here to be, like, incredibly helpful when I was first pondering certain problems regarding gettin' a whole batch of old '50s & 60s West African 45s into digital format:

Cool, man.

Thanks Kenny,

That faq page and a couple of others haven't been updates for a few years - thanks for the reminder  Roll Eyes

Anyway I expect Lew Davis' trombone playing (pre-bebop) sounds errrr primitive to your ears (?) but I love it, you can pick him out so easily on old Bert Ambrose records, a joy to listen to.

Fact is, JW, man, I like the old styles from the beginnin' of recorded jazz, I dig the vocalised elements in the horns & the more collective ensemble kinda playin' & rhythmic energy... in many ways it kinda connects with the rather more demented, er, skronk type stuff I enjoy.

I think
